Weeb Wars / AnimeGate / #KickVic / #IStandWithVic / #vickicksback - General Discussion Thread

Why? It's hardly huge. It's just a boil on the ass of the anime industry. Sony apparently bought nearly the whole thing (95%) for $143 million. That's big but not have an entire embedded legal department big. They'd have general counsel, probably some in-house people to handle IP rights stuff and negotiations, and then hire outside counsel for anything specialized.
According to the lawyers website:
Website said:
Stone continued his focus on intellectual property law as President of the Intellectual Property Law Association at Texas A&M School of Law. During this period, Stone joined the legal team at FUNimation Entertainment, the largest producer and distributor of anime in the United States. There, Stone created and still oversees an all-encompassing intellectual property rights enforcement program operated by three dedicated Infringement Specialists using proprietary software Stone created.
So they've retained him as their copyright lawyer for a while, since before 2010. Not sure why their copyright lawyer would be involved, he seems primarily focused on IP.

Maybe they never thought their company would actively try to get one of their own people fired under false and fraudulent allegations? So they never bothered hiring anyone else but copyright people?

HR should always have some general legal counsel to consult that's less specialized than this. For example, during the Sony deal, at the very least, Kelly Hart & Hallman was legal counsel to Funimation. According to bizjournals. Animation Magazine, however, labeled them as exclusive legal advisers, so maybe that's incorrect.

They want us not to look at how they operate. With fabricated swattings and lies and unsubstantiated allegations you're supposed to believe without questioning them. Virtually everyone involved on the kickvic side has been caught outright lying and even committing crimes of their own, as fake bomb threats like Pensacon perpetrated are, themselves, crimes.

I think these SJWs rampaging on twitter forget that the real world doesn't operate under the rules they apply to each other and to their targets online. 99% of the time it's just some random dude that's getting destroyed and the only negative repercussions end up on the person they're attacking.

To see some people getting threatened with litigation over this behavior is overdue and will hopefully succeed (assuming the facts bear that out). You can't just go labelling people as nazis, racists, rapists and transphobes because you happen to disagree with them; particularly when these accusations end up costing people their jobs.

These last couple of years have gotten way out of control with this stuff and it's time for everybody to dial it back. Shitpost all you want, just don't get people fired or killed by the police. Whatever happened to just calling somebody a fuckface or a dumbass when you disagreed with them online- that shit worked perfectly fine. Hell, threaten to fight them like Tonka even.

May as well get the lawyer you already have on retainer to ring up and ask about settlement terms. If it's out of his league or way too much for a settlement then you can kick it to someone with a more relevant background.

So South Korea is the future of Eastern art?
No, south korea is off it's rocker. Surprisingly, the best animation you're likely to find outside of japan is french.
If you want your anime animated by asians though, i guess you're stuck with cheap chinese knockoffs, as is the case with most things.
Outside of some KPop, Korea's got a long way to go in terms of mainstream (or at least widespread) popularity of animated shows and web comics.

I love how this entire shitshow is a microcosm of the Brett Kavanaugh drama - definitely getting a whole "Salem witch trials" vibe from this whole thing.
- Accusations of sexual assault with no evidence / even a police report
- Fake bomb threats at an anime convention
- Fake evidence (e.g. the original picture of Vic kissing the girl) plus discussions of faking evidence
- Fake allegations of swatting (pulled straight from the Brianna Wu playbook)
- Calling Vic's lawyer a racist, and failing exceptionally to try to get him disbarred (hint future lawyers who might want to defend these idiots, maybe it isn't a great idea to try to defend people who try to get people disbarred and call them racists when things don't go their way.)

You'd think these weebs would've played a Phoenix Wright game or two. You couldn't make this shit up - it's like they all read a bunch of Vox Day and larp as SJWs from those books.
I think he’s not even his lawyer; he just set up the gofundme. Is Nick even licensed to practice in Texas, or is it a repeat of those comic store owners that started review bombing his practice from a state he, again, isn’t able to practice law in anyway.

Here's some background information on this,

Vic created Star Trek Continues, a fan film project where he played Captain Kirk in a series of 11 full-length episodes. There were three crowd funding campaigns for this totaling $539,661 dollars.

Axanar was another Star Trek fan film project. They made a short film, Prelude to Axanar, around the same time, which was also crowdfunded to the tune of $101,171. After the success of this short, there was another round of crowdfunding on Kickstarter where they raised $638,471 to make Axanar, a feature-length film set in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Renegades was also another fan film project in the works. They raised $620,664 in two separate crowd funding campaigns to make a series of episodes.

With Star Trek fan films becoming such big business, CBS and Paramount ended up suing Axanar for copyright infringement. Vic wasn't happy about this, as it meant that his Star Trek series would eventually be shut down too. There's bad blood between these camps because Axanar was seen as ruining it for everyone. Fan film guidelines were released which limited funding to $50,000 and the content to 30 minutes in total.

Of the $638,471 that was raised to make Axanar, a reported $500,000 was spent on their lawsuit, which was eventually settled. The film has thus far not been made and actors that were supposed to be in it have long dropped out.

Star Trek Continues, a registered non-profit company, was allowed to finish the episodes they had planned, but Vic would have liked to do more.

In response to the Axanar lawsuit, Star Trek: Renegades made changes to their later episodes so they would no longer be using the Star Trek IP anymore. (Even though Walter Koenig had been starring as Admiral Chekov)

Cool story, Axanar. Why didn’t you step in and stop the harassment then? Why only speak up now when it’s convenient? Why didn’t you help those poor women being harassed right in front of you?

Nick can't practice in Texas and has alluded to knowing who Vic retained as a lawyer but hasn't spilled the beans. Lets all cross our fingers for this fine gentleman from Texas.

FYI this is Richard C Meyers lawyer in his lawsuit against Mark Waid. The salt, REEEEs and shitflinging will be off the charts if the Comicsgate lawyer also turns out to be the Animegate lawyer.

The salt must flow.

Nick isn't Vic's lawyer, nor is he licensed in Texas. Nick set up the gofundme, the funds go to a trust team who sends the money to whoever actually represents Vic, so neither of them even touch that cash. Nick might be sending them anything interesting he finds, but like he said in one of his latest streams, Vic's lawyers were on the case ages ago, so who knows what they already have access to.

I didn't realize how much I wanted this until this exact moment

The only thing they'll probably ever get to any mainstream animation is getting contracts for cartoons like The Simpsons, Scooby-Doo and Steven Universe or Anime like SAO or Naruto.

I for one approve of this, if only for the salt to be mined from it.

So... Take this with a bit of a grain of salt... But a bunch of Ani-tubers were talking about this and one of them decided to leak all this out. It was also confirmed by person 4 that this was a thing that happened.

I get the joke, but I am fairly optimistic toward a Korean animated film or show becoming popular globally. Would be sorta like Gangnam Style, yet hopefully far less annoying and done-to-death.

Alright, no more derailing the thread. Real talk:
Is this whole shitshow going to be the beginning of the end with Western anime?
I'm not talking like within a few years, but somewhere down the line. Will enough people get sick of this bullshit that they skip over American/Western middlemen, and instead get their stuff straight out of Japan?

I'm already speculating that something along those lines will eventually happen, considering how much drama and bullshit politics are getting mixed up in people's entertainment. Particularly when you look to those awful dubs about patriarchy and gamergate creeps. These guys are messing with the author's original source material to insert their own hot takes. That's pretty fucked if you ask me.

Oh gee, it would have been nice to believe if concocted 'proof' wasn't used multiple times, down to screencaps of that one broad offering to photoshop some hands.

Also, an assblast from the past:

God, these guys exudes Soy, Asspats, and whole bunch of Gay shit that even the gays hate.

Just @ me next time, fuck. Anyhow, I can confirm that both of these...people exude the kind of disgusting soy-miasma that would induce any self-respecting faggot to punch their teeth out. I know I sure as hell would.

Also, just to be clear, Vic is a handsome man. His fangirls are justified in considering him attractive.
