From what I heard, a lot of them are people who recently discovered they are gay, lesbian or bi and aren't out yet, and having a waifu or husbando helps them process and understand their same sex desires, especially if they are in a conservative family/ live in a conservative area and can't come out yet.

The major waifu groups hate Tulpamancy, and the main Tulpamancy groups equally hate Waifuism back.
While they're actually incredibly similar in execution and exceptional quality, they both think the other group is just too delusional. No joke. Tulpamancers think that Waifuism is morally wrong because you're forcing your tulpa to pretend to be a fictional character, and that pretending to have a girlfriend is sad and weird when you can have a real sentient one inside your head. Waifuists think that Tulpamancers are mentally ill and making false delusions that don't accurately represent a fictional character.
You can find people who do both if you look really hard, but typically they get so alienated that they choose one side or another (usually tulpamancy).

I know a couple of the tuplamancy fellas, they agree having a waifu is ok as long as the relationship develops and you tell them they aren't REALLY the character they are based off of.
I find it hard to believe that the waifuists would NOT take the step to make their waifu more real. They already make so many assumptions, and such. Might as well have them actually form a response.
Whether or not you believe that tulpas are sentient or whatever, I can't imagine a real waifust would pass up the opportunity to have his waifu, even if its just on a mental level.
