Honestly, the gig isn't that bad. It pays well, and once you realize that you can't be fired, your life becomes 90% less stressful. Most devs only get walked over because they let themselves be. I feel like I have to remind my coworkers weekly that they have nothing to fear, they don't owe the company anything, and that the field has nearly zero unemployment. Unionization isn't going to work because the industry also essentially forces everyone but COBOL developers out by age 50, and no one but IBM employees really seem to care.
While not in software, I entered another line of work, 16+ years ago that's kinda the same. Longest I've been unemployed was 46 minutes.
