Bigot Brigade Something Awful and Friends - The roller-coaster train-wreck embarrassing downfall of a Web 1.0 giant and its tick offspring like from Cloverfield

Imagine five bottles of Lowtax's meds standing on the edge of a cliff. One of them falls off. The Zybourne Something Awful works the same way.

Lowtax is saying that he loaned ZDR $4000 and since then he’s been radio silent. I’m assuming this was after his Christmas beg-a-thon he got $3000+ from goons.

Lowtax - “I did my due diligence on him, trust me. Let me just explain the reason why he disappeared as best I can without getting into personal details: the issue was in, uh, personal problems, ones that would not show up in any resumes or work history documents.”

"reeeeee no normies" stance on why he didn't make SA more mainstream
I don't think this has ever been true, it's just Lowtax's excuse for failing to find mainstream success and losing relevance to twitter, Facebook and reddit.

In fact, a former mod for the Let's Play subforum, Slowbeef, revealed that Lowtax wasn't even recording stats on site traffic until way after that subforum was created.

An old post from the SA Let's Players thread where Slowbeef talks about Lowtax being Lowtax:

Click the "Lowtax is an Exceptional Individual" spoiler for the transcipt, but basically Slowbeef says that back when he was a mod he was shocked to learn that Lowtax had only just started recording stats on what threads were causing people to sign up and that Lowtax made a special effort to protect the Dangan Ronpa thread (a popular thread about a Japanese visual novel game series) because it was a big draw for the site.

So yeah, seems like, SURPRISE, the reason that SA wasn't meeting its potential is because Lowtax is an incompetent moron.

His forum was in the right place at the right time at the dawn of the internet to build it's own community and he has done literally nothing with it in almost 20 years.

It lasting this long is a statement to the community and it's inability to function anywhere else, not some majestic project spearheaded by a visionary.

If the guy was talented or actually worked then I'm sure he wouldn't have completely squandered the millions it paid him to the point where he ends up in a forum that hasn't changed since the clinton administration whining about his arthritis and demanding handouts to continue doing nothing.

At this point, the place just exists courtesy of it's own apathetic inertia.

Everyone who was legit cool there left or was chased out, all the legit good things they spawned are done better everywhere else, and what's left is miserable shadow of itself populated entirely by the very people they built a reputation on mocking the fuck out of.

So if he's making $10,000 a month in free money, he's going to lift the registration fee - right?

lol. he's probably already made an appointment at a Kansas City car dealership to get a new whip. I'm interested to see if his patreon can maintain anything close to this amount. Also, I wonder if Canuck wife is figuring out how much she can take from lowtax in divorce?

Is Lowtax still married to the second wife? She must be something else if she moved into the situation Lowtax describes (depression, bed all day, doesn't get dressed, etc...) and thought not only will I marry this man but we should have a baby too. It's obvious Lowtax didn't have the resources or need the stress of a wife and new baby to support. (I'm ofc assuming his wife doesn't work.)

I know his back injury probably made things worse, but was there an actual specific injury or a chronic pain issue? I just wondered because there's a big connection between depression and back pain...and since Lowtax says he suffers from depression. I'm sure Lowtax is in pain, but surgery isn't always the answer and can make things worse.

It's sad he let the site stagnant because it was the best forum online for many years. He did make good money at it for a number of years, but he treated it more like a hobby project than a business. The sad part is it could have been a really amazing profitable empire to run - a business lots of people would kill to own. A lot of noted comedy writers were SA regulars and SA incubated so many projects that turned into huge things online. It's kind of amazing he fucked it up give the amount of raw talent and hive mind that was there for so long.

Something doesn't add up in Lowtax's statements about ZDR:
693500

ZDR ghosted on him last year.

693501

But here's ZDR this year, arguing about shit, and:

693502

ZDR has a dozen posts about technical crap in the Questions & Comments subforum, all dated this year. Some just a couple of weeks ago.

Either someone is sockpuppeting ZDR's account or Lowtax has fudged some dates.

Lowtax quit bothering with SA around 2005 because it was always supposed to be a stepping stone to bigger things for him. He failed at everything he's tried. He always ends up coming back to the forums for money and he resents it.

Yeah, uh...that's probably not a good idea considering a lot of troon posters were ushered in through the portal to mom's basement known as the Let's Play subforum.

SA was never going to recover after he let catladies drive off all the good posters while he was fucking around in FYAD in an ambien haze.

e: helldump was like the only good idea he ever had

Even helldump collapsed in on itself thanks to LF and catlady posters screeching about it constantly, and they stopped being attacked for it when FYAD superstars started getting called out and doxed , which is what started "weird twitter" as they left

yeah i'm sure he didn't demonstrate any employable skills by being the admin of one of the largest and most influential comedy websites for 15 years. any idiot can make a forum with hundreds of thousands of paying members whose comedy bleeds into the rest of the internet, you exceptional individual

I know people gave you sass for this post, but I wanted to seriously address your line of thought here.

SA is nowhere near the "largest" or "most influential" comedy website and hasn't been for years (if ever, really). But let's be devil's advocate and just say it was the best website ever in 2004-2007.

He still has no employable skills, your resume really shouldn't have stuff on it from 15 years ago because employers want to know what you can do now for them; not what you maybe could have done in 2005. If you include things from 15 years ago it should be massive or it should showcase your personal growth (15 years ago I was "Desktop Support" and now today I am "Vice President, Technology" sort of deal).

He can't brand himself as a "social media" person because he can't maintain a following anywhere. He can't keep a twitter, he doesn't have a youtube following, his facebook is tiny, his own site had dwindling numbers, and so on.

He can't brand himself as a "content creator scout/manager" because while some content creators got their start on SA; Lowtax was able to retain exactly 0 of them. The entire Let's Play sphere, YOGSCast, Mega64, parts of Minecraft, Yahztee, 4chan, all front page writers, and so on. These are all things that he basically just let slip through his fingers which is not the sign of a person you would bring on in that role. All of this is before you even include his very. very poor hiring of people (two pedo mods, corrupt admins, incompitent side administrators, a diaperfur weirdo cohost/animator).

He can't brand himself as a "Site Administrator" because despite running a forum for 15 years, he's neve actually run it on a technical side (despite 15 years being more than enough time to basically become an expert on it, assuming it was your day job). His forum is so busted (despite making tons of cash) that it not working (archives, search) is one of the longest running jokes on the site. It's a long running joke that you can spend $20 on forum upgrades (search and archives are paid features, btw) and neither of them work. Not only does Lowtax not know how to run the site, but based on his hiring (Radium, ZDR) it's clear the doesn't even know enough to conduct an interview for the position.

He can't even brand himself as a "money guy" either because he squandered so much of SA's cash, between houses, cars, divorces, alimony, etc. Despite being a multi-million dollar enterprise at points (several $500k years) Lowtax has literally nothing to show for it; which is literally the opposite of what any investors are looking for when investing in people for projects.

Lastly, he can't brand himself as a "content creator" because he (nor does his site) really create content anymore. There have been ~7 "photoshop Fridays" since 2017 (of which Lowtax made 0). There hasn't been a "comedy goldmine" since 2017. There hasn't been a "Flash Tub" since 2014 (Lowtax does 0 of these), there hasn't been a "WTF D&D" since 2014 (Lowtax does 0 of those), there hasn't been a post on Everdraed's thing since 2013, and so on. These are all main buttons on SA's frontpage. He can't even be assed to write articles when his site sorely needs them. He wrote 10 artciles in 2018 (for his own website) and none of them are really all that good (example - he even has a "did you know Fallout 76 was a bad game?" type article).

So yes, he has no employable skills. Something Awful was successful despite Lowtax running it, instead of because he was running it. I can only imagine what SA would be today if they had someone who even gave part of a shit about the site instead of Lowtax (reminder - Reddit is worth 1.8 billion dollars and Twitter is worth 4 billion, SA is likely worth thousands).

But if it’s $10K on Patreon that’s essentially just saying that the Patrons pinky promise that on the first of the month their cards will go through and he will really get that much money, for realsies, right? Because it hurts my soul that he can just get handed $10K a month to be a pantsless drug addict... shit, where do I sign up for that gig? I like opiates and Ambien and day drinking!
