New Zealand's gun laws are stricter than the US, but less restrictive than Australia or the UK. You can own pretty much everything except full-autos, but you have to have a firearms license which is only issued if you have a "valid reason" (normally hunting or target shooting). Self-defence isn't considered a valid reason, so you can't CC a pistol in public. If your stated reason is target shooting then you have to be a member of a shooting club, and you have to have attended 12 times in the last 6 months before you can apply for the firearms license. The guns also have to be in a secure safe when they're on your property so other people can't have access to them. But overall I'd say it's fairly lenient.
