I think it’s pretty undeniable that various political and demographic trends created a tense mood and trepidation about the future, that people can make a buck off of that paranoia, and worst of all discussion of these things is confined to sites like the chans which amplify the neuroses and paranoia of disturbed people like this guy no doubt was.
And his goal was to exacerbate the political divisions driven by these forces and in turn further drive them.

I agree this is the new normal, that it was a cowardly and vile act, and that the forces which created this situation are bad even if they resulted in no terrorist attacks but this makes them that much worse. And I agree the response from the political establishment will be entirely hypocritical and self-serving, which will also entrench the paranoid sentiments of future shooters. Everything I have read here has been on-point.

That NZ are clamping down so hard on the information though that these police divisions would have to turn to KF to get that info is what I find truly remarkable in all this.

From the viewpoint of the NZ police, that video is evidence and you don't just go handing out copies of evidence to other agencies while the legal process is playing out. Plus they'll be combing through mountains of other evidence and analysing the fuck out of the video themselves right now. No-one's got time to be worrying about how to handle requests from other agencies over the weekend.

The quickest way for other agencies to get that video is informally. While it seems like there'd be no urgency to get it, other agencies taking a look at it might notice something the kiwi agencies don't.
