Wrong. This is the new normal. People don't make enough and aren't comfortable enough to be a member of a cohesive group.
Some sociologists and psychologists did a long term study which shows that intra-group violence among humans is 500 times less than that of chimps, but inter-group violence has been basically on par with chimps for the oberwhelming majority of human history.
Humans are nice and good, as long as you belong to the same group. It has only been since the last world war that humanity as a whole has agreed to not start civilization shattering wars, and that's really only because nukes exist. Nuclear weapons are the single most peaceful invention mankind has devised. Take the India-Pakistan border conflict last week: Those two countries honestly want nothing more than to annex and exterminate the other, and nukes prevented that.
We are rapidly approaching a point where the right and left in the West are so divided, mainly because nowadays you don't have to truly interact with the other side, you can live your life online, follow a block list on Twitter, and get spoon fed exactly what you want to hear 24/7. That breeds these group identities that are every bit as dangerous and divisive as the India-Pakistan divide. The only difference is the New Right and Communist wings don't have nuclear weapons to properly prevent escalation.
Right now, as we speak, tens of millions of military-aged-males are rejoicing that these people were shot and killed, no memes about, they aren't doing it ironically, they are actually happy and want more. There is an equal number of people that want to go and do the exact same thing to a Patriot Prayer rally or whaterver the fuck, and will laugh and rejoice if someone that isn't them does it.
Simply put, humans are biologically designed to not only not give a fuck about other groups, but to actively kill and destroy them if they pose a threat, and that is what is happening. For a long time we could point to World War veterans and Holocaust survivors, especially in government, but they are all dead or retired now. The ONLY thing preventing one side from genociding the other is the fact that most people are just barely comfortable enough to think eating shit is an equal trade to being well fed and cared for. I'm telling you, as soon as people can't afford basic staples, as soon as the next economic crisis hits, it's fucking on, and just like in the Spanish Civil War, there will be no middle ground, so you need to decide now if you would rather shoot Communists or Nazis, because if you don't pick a side, either side will shoot you first to maje sure you don't join the other team. If you can't decide right now, just be prepared to join the winning team.
