Facebook megathread

Apple has shut down Facebook’s ability to distribute internal iOS apps, from early releases of the Facebook app to basic tools like a lunch menu. A person familiar with the situation tells The Verge that early versions of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other pre-release “dogfood” (beta) apps have stopped working, as have other employee apps, like one for transportation. Facebook is treating this as a critical problem internally, we’re told, as the affected apps simply don’t launch on employees’ phones anymore.

The shutdown comes in response to news that Facebook has been using Apple’s program for internal app distribution to track teenage customers with a “research” app.

That app, revealed yesterday by TechCrunch, was distributed outside of the App Store using Apple’s enterprise program, which allows developers to use special certificates to install more powerful apps onto iPhones. Those apps are only supposed to be used by a company’s employees, however, and Facebook had been distributing its tracking app to customers. Facebook later said it would shut down the app.

This poses a huge issue for Facebook. While Apple provides other tools a company can use to install apps internally, Apple’s enterprise program is the main solution for widely distributing internal apps and services. In an email, a Facebook spokesperson said “I can confirm that this affects our internal apps.”

In a statement given to Recode, Apple said that Facebook was in “clear breach of their agreement with Apple.” Any developer that breaches that agreement, Apple said, has their distribution certificates revoked, “which is what we did in this case to protect our users and their data.” Apple declined to comment on shutting down all of Facebook’s internal apps in an email to The Verge.

Revoking a certificate not only stops apps from being distributed on iOS, but it also stops apps from working. And because internal apps by the same organization or developer may be connected to a single certificate, it can lead to immense headaches like the one Facebook now finds itself in where a multitude of internal apps have been shut down.

Apple and Facebook have already been bickering over privacy, but this is the first instance of Apple taking an action that directly shuts down some of Facebook’s activities. Last March, Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized Facebook’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal, saying, “I wouldn’t be in this situation” if he were running the company. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later said the comments were “extremely glib” and spoke of Apple as a company that “work hard to charge you more.”

Facebook is a private company, if they don’t want to host chucklefucks like Richard Spencer they don’t have to.

Thank you Cosmos, very cool.

If my private company decides they don't want to host blacks or gays, how would that work out for me in the great United States of Freedomland? Oh, that's illegal? Okay, then I don't give a shit about what Facebook wants to host or not host, they can serve everyone without discriminating.

They weren't breaking rules so faceberg changed the rules to fuck them, why aren't they now doing the same to anti-vaxxers, alt-medicine or pro-drug groups? Faceberg is helping them spread their lies that destroy lives and kill people probably far more than white separatists ever have.

If they're willing to change rules to "deplatform" a group isn't that a tacit endorsement of all the groups they don't "deplatform"?

All those other groups you described tend to live in American liberal enclaves.

I personally tend to take the Glenn Greenwald stance on this - they'll come for the leftists they don't like eventually.

lol nobody who isn’t a racist should have a problem with this

Everyone is a little bit racist. We know this because there is a song called “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist” and it is very cute. Also because most people score poorly on implicit association tests, because a lot of white people will get anxious if they see a black man on a deserted street late at night, and because if you prime people with traditionally white versus traditionally black names they will answer questions differently in psychology experiments. It is no shame to be racist as long as you admit that you are racist and you try your best to resist your racism. Everyone knows this.

Donald Sterling is racist. We know this because he made a racist comment in the privacy of his own home. As a result, he was fined $2.5 million, banned for life from an industry he’s been in for thirty-five years, banned from ever going to basketball games, forced to sell his property against his will, publicly condemned by everyone from the President of the United States on down, denounced in every media outlet from the national news to the Podunk Herald-Tribune, and got people all over the Internet gloating about how pleased they are that he will die soon. We know he deserved this, because people who argue he didn’t deserve this were also fired from their jobs. He deserved it because he was racist. Everyone knows this.

So.

Everybody is racist.

And racist people deserve to lose everything they have and be hated by everyone.

This seems like it might present a problem. Unless of course you plan to be the person who gets to decide which racists lose everything and get hated by everyone, and which racists are okay for now as long as they never cross you in any way.

This has been covered before. Race, gender, and sexuality are protected classes but ideologies aren’t. This is because you can’t change your sex/race but ideology is a choice. A bar would get in trouble for throwing out a black guy for being black, but they can throw out someone wearing a MAGA hat. You may disagree with it, but the law says that ideologies (except for religion in many cases) are not a protected class.

law says that OJ didn't do it

Because if there's one thing that Silicon Valley has consistently demonstrated, it's that they're totally competent to make this distinction.

Since white nationalists are supposedly forced to go underground by this move, any phrase or idea that is politically inconvenient can now be flagged as a dog-whistle for the white nationalists who are now, again supposedly, operating in secret, and excluded from discussion. Who moderates the moderators?

Could one not argue that a bar allowing all nationalists except "one race nationalists" is engaging in indirect race discrimination? After all black nationalists are most likely to be black, Jewish nationalists to be Jewish, white nationalists to be white, etc.

To answer this somewhat less flippantly, you're only sort of correct here. The current US system could be called Schrödinger's Free Association. For example, race is a protected class, and it is illegal to deny someone entry based on race... unless you're running the campus Black Student Union, in which case a-ok to restrict entry purely on the basis of race. It's illegal to deny someone service based on sex... unless you're operating a women-only spa, in which case it's a-ok to restrict service purely on the basis of sex. As of right now, it's perfectly acceptable to penalize whites and asians in college admissions (asians may change based on the outcome of the pending Harvard discrimination suit).

My preference would be for actual free association, but if that's not possible then I think the next best thing would be forcing businesses that serve the public to service the public without discrimination.

who even is apart from bored mothers and e-girls trying to avoid having to get a job at Burger King? the platform is a joke more than anything, even for normies.
It's what I've always said, the Wild West was considered "tamed" when the grannies from the more civilized parts of the East deemed it safe to move in. When your grandma deems any Social Media website to be safe for her to use, that's when it's time for you to get the hell out of there, cause that just means it's no longer cool and exciting anymore
