Well, you have to remember there are two types of "trans" people.
On the one hand you have Transgender people, who have Gender Dysphoria, who are men (and rarely women) with a mental illness who, in very rare instances, resolve this via pretending to be the other sex. There are more men than women doing this at something like a 1000 to 1 ratio partially because no one gives a shit if a woman is a tomboy, and partially because there's some buried science that suggests that Transgenderism is literally just a form of Autism -- and almost all Autistic people are men.
On the other hand there's "Transgender" people, who are an unholy combination of Cross Dressing Sex Perverts who realized they could link their fetish to actual Transgender people and force others to accept them, "Identity" Marxist types who smelled a new form of identity politics they could stir the pot of, and the 2019 version of goths -- people pretending to be broken for attention and asspats.
(Seriously, I cannot stress this enough. "Tumblr Tranny" is the 201X version of dying your hair black, wearing shitty black clothes + makeup, and writing bad poetry. Except in 2030 all these poor fuckers will have permanently fucked up bodies because of it. Imagine if Goths were advocating for black makeup to be tattooed on in the 90s and how the world would look like today, and you'll get a preview of 2030.)
The latter, sometimes called "TransTrenders" because they're literally only doing it because it's trendy, actually consider the former to be the Tranny version of TERFs. They call them "
Truscum" or "Medical Fundamentalists" and HATE HATE HATE HATE that people suffering from a crippling mental illness might dare try to gatekeep all that nice rich oppression and attention for themselves.
I have some sympathy for "real" Transgender people, those with Gender Identity Disorder / Chronic Gender Dysphoria, since they literally can't help it. If those types have reached the point where they're changing their name et all they've likely exhausted all other options. Or at least, they used to before it became Trendy.
The TransTrender types, the pronouns-in-the-bio assholes, "I can choose to be female on Fridays if I want to" types, can fuck RIGHT off, though. The problem being that this group is influencing the former group with bullshit like "Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria" and other fake science, or trying to push all people with Dysphoria to transition, when before the Trenders showed up only like 10-20% of the already rare people with GID / CGD would transition, the rest getting therapy and getting over it.
And it's decidedly the second camp, the TransTrender types, that want to claim all gender tropes and anything to do with gender as their own domain. It's very telling that these types see "trap" -- literally a Japanese trope of an explicitly male cross-dresser that causes confusion in heterosexual men looking on -- and mistake it as being a reference to... themselves.
For a similar scandal from a few years back, remember when Brianna Wu took a Tumblr Troon's blog post about how Samus Aran was supposedly Transgender and got The Mary Sue to post her and some other Troon's theory about it. The "evidence?" An old joke interview from the Super Metroid era wherein one of the artists on Super Metroid said "A secret about Samus Only I know? She's actually a NewHalf (Japanese slang for Shemale)."
Of course, when the pushback on that hit and everyone basically told Wu and her other Troon friend to fuck off, said other Troon friend had... well, an interesting reaction:
