But finches have a shorter lifespan than humans. In the time it would take for a generation of humans to be born, reach maturity, reproduce, and die, there could be hundreds of finch generations and therefore they could react quicker to changes in their environment through selective breeding.

Absolutely. The finches have a more limited gene flow (on an island if its the ones I’m thinking of) and shorter lifespans. It can happen fast in humans too. There’s tentative evidence that the high prevalence of one of the cystic fibrosis alleles is a response to selective pressure during the waves of Black Death in Europe, and there are multiple examples of humans adapting to environments they’ve only been in a few thousand years (altitude adaptations, cold adaptations etc.) when it comes to skin colour genetics as you go north I think it’s a bit more complex. There were a few papers published a while back saying the first peoples back into Britain after the ice were dark skinned (cheddar man, should you google) but I think there’s been some back pedalling on that and the team who published are now couching it in terms of probability of skin tone. Lighter skin tones we still dont really know for sure when they arose - possibly latitude, cloud cover and Neanderthal input? It’s all theory. Edited to add that skin colour is dictated by several genes so lightening would be unlikely to be too quick unless there was a significant founder effect. It’s unlikey to happen with a single gene event.

Theoretically it only takes a single genetic change to create the possibility of speciation if populations are physically in the same space. It’s fascinating stuff anyway.

Lol yeah CHEDDA MANE was an example of woke science, a single study with questionable methodology was used to justify endless shitskin colonization of Europe in multiple news articles.

As far as skin color adaptation, we know selection pressure in favor of light skin was very strong given certain conditions because it evolved independently twice. The genes that East Asians have for light skin are completely different from European populations. Both populations bias in favor of low vitamin D diets.
