It's kind of always been a shitshow. Just the internet allows everyone to retreat into their echo chambers where they can become more and more radical. Also we were all kids, so we probably didn't notice it and went back to playing halo, metal gear and smash bros.

I was a teenager/young adult during the Bush years, and I was very much paying attention. As bad as things were under Bush, there at least seemed to be a logic to it, no matter how awful it was. Conservatives were the ones who hated fun and wanted to monitor us because MUH TERRORISM and wanted to censor us because MUH CHILDREN. Or at least, that's how it seemed. Leftists who wanted to censor people seemed like a faint minority that nobody took seriously because they were all either whacked-out feminists, conservative Democrats, or just plain insane. Now everything feels topsy-turvy and I'm wondering if maybe I was just blinded by being young and idealistic. My views haven't changed all that much but everybody else has and I feel like I'm a crazy person.

Fuck you, Matt, for furthering my existential crisis.

I think there's elements of the mainstream left that's always been FOR censorship. After all, what are hate speech laws but a form of censorship? And who remembers Tipper Gore's crusade against explicit music? or Hillary Clinton's brief crusade against violent video games? I think it's ramped up in recent years because you have a new mainstream left orthodoxy in the form of the social justice left who believe that censorship isn't just necessary, but desirable in quite a few instances, bringing them in line with the kind of social conservatism that brought america things like the Moral Majority, or Britain the Mary Whitehouses and her 'video nasties'. The kind of authoritarians who believe they know better than you. As I said before, I think they're cut from the same paternalist cloth.

Censors and authoritarians come in all kinds of shapes, colours and sizes. Their clothing may be different, and they may even talk about making people safe and be appealing or cuddly, But they always reveal themselves. "Ye shall know them by their fruits" indeed. A censor is a censor whether they thump a holy or a grievance studies book. Whether they go on about supposed satanism in music or how video games will make kids shoot up schools or perpetuate toxic masculinity. It's all the damned same. Same shit different clothing.

I think when observing and listening to people online, and seeing people's views, I think it's important that you don't allow internet crazies to gaslight you. I think there is a much larger amount of reasonable people. It's just retarded extremists and their orbiters are naturally louder, Especially on the internet and media where the most noticeable people are extremists. Often because they're admittedly usually more interesting. I mean, what is Kiwi Farms, but an archive for extreme personalities?

Sometimes I honestly want to feel a sliver of sympathy for the poor dolt, to be so blindly entrenched in his partisanship that he only ever ends up hurting himself and looking like one of the most unhinged fools the internet has to offer.
