Sony is implementing stricter rules on sexual content in its PlayStationvideo games, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The new in-house standards reflect growing concern about the depiction of women in video games.

Sony established its own guidelines "so that creators can offer well-balanced content on the platform" and gaming "does not inhibit the sound growth and development" of young people, a company spokeswoman told the Journal.

Sony representatives told the Journal that its decision was based on the rise of the #MeToo movement, which swept through industries like tech and entertainment, unseating power players such as actors, anchors and venture capitalists accused of sexual assault and harassment. The company is also worried about financial liability.

"Sony is concerned the company could become a target of legal and social action," a Sony representative told the Journal.

The issue came to a head in 2014 with death and rape threats directed at women beginning over the GamerGate controversy, an online campaign against cultural critic Anita Sarkeesian, of the Feminist Frequency web series, and others for challenging the way women are portrayed in video games.

Sarkeesian was forced into hiding and canceled a speaking engagement at Utah State University after the school got emails threatening the "deadliest school shooting in American history" if she appeared.

The PlayStation 4 is the world's most popular video game console, with more than 94 million units sold worldwide. Sony's games division accounts for about one-third of the company's total revenue.

Sony representatives in the US didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Yeah because why stand and fight against the smearing and lies of dangerhairs who don't give a fuck if you're wholesome or not as long as they can find fucking something to complain about? I'm sure backing the fuck away is going to make them stop inventing reasons why your entertainment biz is -ist in some way they haven't thought of yet. Go for broke, go for woke! Or something close to that.

Well this is a poor fucking solution to that one because these shitting people aren't your customers, genius. You may not be in court defending against a loon who said your video game literally raped them but you will be flummoxed why people aren't buying your latest exclusive "Spider-Person"

I can’t wait for Uncharted 5, where Nathan, the character we actually like is replaced with his daughter from UC4’s ending, whose now a morbidly obese transman who cries “RAPE” at enemies to distract them. And our only “allies” right now are spergs like QuarterPounder and Billy D. We need someone like Mark Kern or the director of KCD about now, someone who isn’t a raving sperg and knows how the industry actually works and how to get shit done in it. It likely, won’t happen but goddammit, I wanna be:optimistic:

Aside from being obvious and total bullshit, that is such a slimy statement to make.

I could make an assumption about how the average Californian defines the 'sound growth and development' of a young person (hint: it involves a scalpel and a bottle of pills), but in all seriousness, couple of things. First, it's not 1986. Small children aren't the majority of Sony's audience. I'm an adult with a credit card, Sony. Are you looking out for my sound growth and development as well?

Second, I was taught growing up that lecturing and reprimanding other people's children is generally frowned upon. It's an unspoken agreement in the adult world; parents take care of their own, everybody else keeps quiet. Sony is not your goddamn parent. Aside from essentially doing a job the ESRB has already finished, do we have so little faith that we don't think the average working mom can pick up a game package, see some spilling cleavage and say, "No, I don't think so, son."

But, like I said, it's bullshit. Because...

If you had any inkling of doubt where this was coming from, there you go.

Because Nintendo doesn't seem to give a shit about #GamerGate, #MeToo, Sarkeesian, legal trouble, or some woman wanting a return purchase on a blowjob from 20 years ago. They're getting all the tiddy game ports and are about to clean up.

This is straight from the crowd that moved into the California gulag.

Also, what is "social action?" Does this mean Sony is terrified of Twitter mobs?

It's because Nintendo stayed in Japan whereas Sony moved to California and got Aids. It must be in the air or something because everyone who moves to Cali becomes authoritarian, preachy, and obnoxious.

Japan has been getting a lot of Nihonphobic reactions last gen, from decline of Japanese gaming to the piddling reviews of Japanese games. It was made worse because the victims of censorship were the ones getting slammed by Kotaku and other media affilitrates. You cant bribe a SocJus with money, only through actions. So come Japanese Gaming Renaissance and the smaller devs and their fanbase have lost their value to Sony who can just promote Yakuza and Monster Hunter World as their quality games while playing to the fears of the hardcore weebs who play neptunia and other budget games where the company is too poor to get a translator or have an understanding of western expectation of sex which is less Puritan and more responsible sexual content like depicting sex as sex, lgbt romances as actual lgbt experiences. Beingal as realistic as possible which chafed with Japanede game design

And Nintendo reslly doesnt need to censor since their AAA titles make so much money that they can ignore whatever reputation hit the panty quest games may give. Hell it may be beneficial to welcome them because mobile game is dictated by waifu material and mediocre waifu material may as well go back to themobile games with 1-2 year lifecycles

Honestly if they just said that they are tired of the shovelware tarnishing the console reputation it would have worked

Going full Socjus is retarded, especially if you're planning to focus on the mobile market.

The smaller devs are just going to go to Nintendo instead of Sony, since Nintendo doesn't even have a fucking policy. Bigger Devs like CD Projekt Red can basically give the finger to Sony and Sony will bend the knee because they will lose so much money if they censored the game. Middle devs are the problem, but Nintendo is only an option. Shame the PC market never really took off in Japan, otherwise this wouldn't matter much.

But Sony is doing everything it can to kill Playstation as the most profitable part of the company.

Kinda hope this won’t bleed into games like EDF. If it did, that might actually get some Journo cogs turning, the unwashed troons over at Kotakugon shockingly enjoy those games
