Diseased Shippers, Anti-Shippers, and Shipping Wars - When fictional characters fucking each other is a political statement

I don't get why so many shippers need their ships to be canon. I sure as hell don't even want some of my ships to be canon.
Validation. If their ship is canon that means the writers are on THEIR side and that makes THEM the winners. Congratulations, your favorite make-believe characters kissed onscreen. Do you want a trophy?

They can't get their dophamine rush in an actual relationship, so they need to live vicariously through a fictional one. But you'd think it not being canon would give them more freedom to write as many fics as they want.

I'm sorry, what?

What.

I think it fits better in the Waifu culture thread.

It would if it's not for the "selfship" (which they shortened to "F/O", apprently) narrative they're trying to push. Like I don't remember this being a way to describe how you would ship yourself (or at least a self-insert) with a fictional character in a fanfic, but holy shit this is nuts.

They almost behave like actual waifuists, though. Perhaps self-shippers are an overlap between shippers and waifuists (then again, it's possible that they use "ship" because they're in a culture where shipping is common).

Anyway, I made a short introduction to self-shippers in the waifuists thread back in January:

Heads up, a similar community to r/waifuism is emerging on Twitter called the #ObsessiveShippersClub, though the hashtag #SelfShip is also used. It consists of people who call themselves "self-shippers", people who ship themselves with a fictional character. Self-shippers themselves have been around for a while, as they probably use the term to avoid the use of "waifu" and "husbando" altogether. But the hashtag was created when someone was told that she was being unhealthily obsessive for buying a Sash mug.

Here are some screenshots:

They also have a discord link if anyone wants to check it out: https://discord.gg/R278bKk

You definitely can tell I don't go looking for these people lol, this came up out of nowhere and was literally my first time seeing it being called as such and it shorted out my neurons. I just think it's fucking hilarious that they're taking it to the next level while playing mental gymnastics with themselves over why this is okay for them and don't you dare kinkshame and why it is it's not like "Waifuism" when it's just a sect that broke away from fan fiction.

Really, what got to me was the Mewtwo fucker (sorry, lover) claiming they're not mentally ill (which rofl nice way to be ableist ;)) but are trying to justify their sad existence with the other "selfshippers". You sweet summer child, Mewtwo's not going to teleport into your bedroom to telepathically sweep you off your feet for a moonlight flight, and it's not just because he's not real. Least you're not proclaiming you're going to lose your virginity to some guy wearing a Mewtwo suit or are thinking of getting plastic surgery to look like him, but seriously:

Imagine being such spoiled (wo)manchildren, being reminded about something as trivial as a sunk OTP makes you "triggered", "nauseous", "emotionally blank", etc.

Leaving the avatars and names/nicknames not-blanked because, unsurprisingly, many of these brats are Sheith shippers who are still throwing tantrums over Keith not being entitled to Shiro's cock.

Man, it still blows my mind to think that rabid Sheith fangirls still believe that Keith is the gay version of an Incel when his affection for Shiro was shown IN CANON to be sincerely selfless, no matter its nature. I bet they also think that the creators liking some Sheith art totally meant THEY'LL MAKE THEM CANON OH MAI GAWD!!!!

(also LMAO at these "fans" still pretending to give a shit about Allura after seven seasons of ignoring her unless it was for shipping purposes)

Stepping outside of fandom culture was the best decision young me ever made, but I still enjoy hovering around fandoms about my interests to see what these weirdos are up to.

I'm sure some people would reasonably be squicked about age gaps as big as 30 years apart, but could you imagine that Tumblr takes their pedophilia accusation so seriously that they'd flip their shit over two characters who have an age gap of 2/3 years? Just cause the other half is 18.

Enter the Ava's Demon fandom.
Ava's Demon is a webcomic by Michelle Czajowski, IIRC a former art contributor for Homestuck and a popular Tumblr artist.
The comic is a space drama with a bunch of kids being haunted by dead aliens, their "demons" who have to enact revenge on a space dictator.
It's actually pretty neat so far, has some intricately painted panels and even end-of-chapter animated sequences that get better as the comic progresses. But I know that's not what you guys are here for.

It does have a bit of diversity points (aside from the aliens, we currently have a POC main character and 5 known LGBT+ characters) but has yet to go the deep end of SJWism. You can gather that it's the sort of thing Tunglr would love and OH BOY did they sink their teeth into the webcomic.

From shipping discourse and accusations of "problematic" story elements, the artist & author (Michelle) has been obsessively harassed by her fans multiple times over the comic's 8 years of existence to the point where sometime early on she had to delete her personal Tumblr.

The juiciest and most controversial shipping drama is Flaming Arrow/Ava x Odin.

Without getting too deep, the main problem is that for the longest time Odin's age was unknown and being a tall hairy dude (and I've seen tall hairy dudes back in high school) most people assumed he was 18 or even as old as 25 being shipped with a confirmed 15 year old who has a baby-face. The only indication given about Odin's age is that one of the characters mentioned he was 18 (retconned).
There was also an argument about it being a toxic dynamic because the dude was shady and seemed malicious for the first half of the story.
The fujos and yuri shippers were also being pissy cause there was a hetero ship in their fandom and would say that if the Hets wanted a Hetero ship they could have the one confirmed Het couple. They also made whiny implications that Ava would become less Bi/LGBT if stuck with a guy.

Your usual shipping wars ensued with a majority of the fandom railing against Flaming Arrow shippers for the crimes of shipping pedophilia!!!111 With the usual death threats and witch hunts against the shippers who were defending themselves for the most part.

I wish I could upload candid shots of the ship wars themselves but alas, I don't want to crawl through the cesspit that is Tumblr fandom. The fan base is still very much alive so there might be new discourse as new story updates come.

From what I've seen, it seems like the Anti-Flaming Arrow shippers are those from other ships that include Ava and Odin.
There's GilOdin, for the fujoshis who are probably very displeased that Flaming Arrow has a likelihood of being endgame.
And Forestfire who were incredibly pissed with Michelle because she confirmed that Maggie is heterosexual. As usual, they still continue to ship her with Ava whom she seems to have a serious hate boner towards to the point where she's physically abusive. (Usually Tumblrinas would consider their dynamic to be highly toxic but it's cool cause they're interracial lesbians.)

I swear all this moral bullshit is just their justification to fight on the internet over ships.

Over the years Michelle's made a conscious decision to chisel up Ava's baby face to avoid the pedophilia accusations and at some point Odin was also revealed to be 17, news with which the Flaming Arrow shippers used to make jabs at the Gil (20) x Odin shippers because now their ship ironically became "pedophilia" by Tumblr standards.
Up to that point I stopped following the #Discourse.

All that stupidity for fictional characters aside...I'm amazed again by these SJW tards who choose to latch onto a comic with expressly DARK themes. In the comic, there is a scene of a crowd being burned to cinders, a character being peeled apart to the nervous system by a machine + a bunch of other body horror, but their biggest concerns is if their uwu gay beans will shack it up in the end. Either that or they start literally crying and shaking when the problematic themes come up.

They flipped their shit as recently (as in like two years ago) as with Voltron when the characters' ages were revealed, and they freaked the fuck out over their Klance pairing being pedophillic when it was revealed Lance was 17 and Keith was 18 from season one. But they're also the same ones still screeching months after Voltron finished that Klance, Sheith, every popular gay pairing isn't canon.

So which fandom is still worse in that aspect?

So, Avengers: Endgame has been released and it seems the shippers are having gigantic tittybaby meltdowns. Can someone mire versed in MCU stuff tell us WTF is going on, even if it’s under spoiler tags for obvious reasons?! :story:

Haven't been following Voltron so I didn't know but honestly they're both pretty shitty fandoms. I've just got a feeling that things will get worse with AD as it's still ongoing.

Gonna watch it sometime this week so I'll let you guys know.

From what I'm seeing on Twitter, it's because of teh ghei. They wanted one of the established characters to be gay, or preferably two so they could be canon, but instead a more minor character said he missed his boyfriend. And of course, it's Not Enough unless the gays are at the center of the plot that suddenly revolves around them being gay rather than, y'know, the actual story.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of the salt is directed at Cap going back into the past to be with Peggy, revealing him to be her mystery husband. Mostly people saying he needed to get over that bitch and buttfuck Bucky instead.

So the usual.

Ahaha, why the fuck am I not shocked? But still, anyone who thought he'd just "get over" Peggy was blind AF. And I say it as a Stucky fangirl, even! :story:

I just read the first 30 or so pages of this thread... then I skipped to the end when blood start pouring uncontrollably out of my eyes and ears. Well to be honest, I skimmed most of it seeing I have no idea what 90% of these anime vidya pony faggot shit franchises are anyways... but I think I've picked up some solid advice that I'll share for the benefit of the community:

  1. Find something you like... a movie, TV show, book, vidya, whatever.
  2. Enjoy that thing.
  3. Never, ever, fucking ever under any circumstances read about that thing on the internet.

I'm almost 100% sure that autism isn't contagious... but goddamn when I started rooting for Finnrey just because it would piss off the Reylos... I realized I was through the looking glass and it shook me to my core.
