Shante is a belly dancer this is not the appropriate atire for a belly dancer

The 1970s called; they want their pantsuit back.

Shante does Oryantal Dans (Turkish Belly Dance)
And the traditional outfit looks nothing like the redesign

Plus kids way below 16 do it as well:

Guys also perform most of the same dance moves, although the costuming is usually different.

Please don't let Tumblr know.

That weird Dumbledore/Moomin goat thing she's sitting on is meant to be Toriel, by the way.

To me this is one of the worst pieces in her gallery - and a lot of it is to do with the fact that it breaks so many art rules. I had to stare at it for a good five minutes or so to actually figure out where proportions were and where the cat monster ended and Jevil's foot started. The cat monster's expression is kinda hard to make out too.

This is apparently a meme going around tumblr right now which is all about constant themes/improvements/whatever in your art, and this person decided to join in. I think it sums up the problems with most of her art quite well.

What bothers me is that there's 0 variation in line thickness. It makes everything visually blend together in way that's confusing and unsatisfying. I swear to god, a good chunk of the artists in this thread have such a poor understanding of these

You know, I'm very impressed by the fact that they are able to keep the same line variation throughout. Not many people can do that. But at the same type it really kills part of the flow for each drawing. Because the lines are so thin and quick with the strokes, the original form is lost. In the last pic I could barely tell who each character was. I think making the lines thicker could possibly help them in the long run because it's so hard to see anything. The flat colors only make this work. Everyone kind of looks like blobs.

There's a reason why they recommend you use thick-to-thin lines. And many other artist avoid this problem usually making it up through coloring, but when you don't have that it looks very messy and unfinished. Or maybe you have thick bold lines and thin inner lines so the characters stand out (you risk them looking like stickers, but it's infinitely better than this).

The problem as mentioned before, with tumblr artists, is that the entire website is a vacuum space for super bad art or VERY good art. There is no in-between. It's very hard to get popular on the site without some sort of appeal. Many people in these woke crowds appeal to that mentality and it's super easy to get popular following those sets of rules. The more popular artists usually don't care so it's really just a whole cesspool of either SJW art, beginner art, and very good art. I really can't stress enough that while there are good tutorials by better artists on the site, it can EASILY get buried under awful artwork and people doing things that they think they're doing right, but really aren't. But the sad thing is that unless you're super woke, people will be so easily to discredit them.

For the brush thing here's what I mean:

Meh, these don't look too bad. The second one looks very well-drawn if I'm gonna be honest so I don't know why it's on here.

(also forgive me for going off-topic for a minute, but I haven't been catching up with Homestuck since maybe 2016 and I am completely lost as to why most people are complaining about the "epilogue", could someone explain what happened?)

A lot of bullshit, apparently.

The ending to Homestuck was widely regarded as unsatisfying but there was apparently going to be some kind of epilogue afterwards, which somehow didn't come out until now (in written form and it's bascially an Ao3 story). I didn't actually read a lot of it tbh because I can't bring myself to care that much about nuHomestuck

These are always the most unpleasant kinds of art to look at, in my opinion. I can't really explain why, but the way all of the elements in these pictures come together is nauseating to look at and it gives me a headache.

"Unique features" on the Shantae redesign, lol... you mean a hooked nose, a stereotype of the Indian race.

Feeling like you need to exaggerate the ethnic features of Asian characters because you think cute, youthful facial features don’t make them look Asian is “uniquely” racist! :D

But seriously though, I hate when artists pull that shit on Asian characters. Turning a cute girl into a pug-faced blob with skin the color of spoiled mustard isn’t “realistic” or “accurate,” it’s insulting and more than a little racist.

More importantly it’s unnecessary - an Asian character isn’t “white passing” just because their skin is lighter than butterscotch and their nose is small. If your character is [ethnicity] and you know what [ethnicity] people look like, you don’t have to jump through hoops to portray them accurately. References are your friend.

Then again, you don’t have to lack references of real Asian people to fuck them up in your art - just look at K-Pop Tumblrites.
I always knew K-Pop attracted SJW types but I thought it was safe from race-butchering shit because of how much fans respect their idols. I guess these fans don’t consider turning their bias into a queer yellow troll to be disrespectful. :(

I realize I mostly mentioned East Asians, but this sort of “race exaggeration” trend also applies to non-East Asians like Shantae here. In fact South and West Asians usually get it worse, because people will take their medium-toned skin and sharper features and morph them into dark chocolate goblins.

"Too much skin exposed, she's a child in the fantasy middle east"

"in the fantasy middle east"

How can you be this dumb to miss the point, its hurts my head.

Jesus, you remind me of a conversation I had with another person who wanted to claim Shantae was created by "horny men", but I mentioned the point that in actuality Shantae was made by a woman. The original design was created by a husband/wife duo Matt Bozon and Erin(she mostly focused on the design work while Matt did the lore and setting). And even then, originally Shantae was created by Erin who was in full support of the idea. Original Shantae doesn't look too different at all. Just goes to show that even normal people can separate fiction from reality.

The point is these people are super hypocritical to shit like this. Despite the fact there are multiple studies to show that video games will not turn your kid into a mindless killer, people still want to play the "think of the children!" card and claim "dudebros" are ruining everything. They aren't. Characters that show a bit of skin does not inherently make them sexual. Just like how people will freak out over the Persona 5, Kasumi, wearing a leotard, something related to her backstory by the way as a rhythmic dancer, does not make it sexual. In that case, you are openly admitting that these girls are somehow sexual and should be shamed. If you're going to pull that card, you can't go back on it. Because what else are they possibly implying? All gymnasts with leotards and showing their chests/thighs are sluts? I literally saw someone claim that because they gave the girl "thigh highs" it's sexual. You really can't win.

It's no wonder to me why so many of these redesigns fail as they succeed in taking all the appeal out of the characters to make them just as boring as the people complaining about it.

No 16 year old girl is going to play Bayonetta or Shantae and get insecure. And if they do, THEY are the one with the problem.

People understand that a video game is trivia because it is NOT REAL.

It's the modern age minstrel show born from a misguided idea that ugly features can be made attractive just by cramming them in all at once. I mentioned it previously but it's entirely possible to make ugly features appealing when balanced out by nicer ones.

Want a fuck-off huge nose on a non-ugly character? Balance it with large eyes and little mouth for best results especially if it's a woman.

And then you can make a prudish design (without resorting to the burqa cliche) with appeal but it's super tricky, you need a sense of humor about it too.

Why do they pretend that female power fantasies can't exist? Men do not have a monopoly on pretending to be a badass
Doesn't fit the narrative. "Want to look sexy and dress in clothes that you considering liberating despite being 16? Don't do that! You're supposed to be a victim. She's only 15! It's not like there are plenty of teenager who find that as a form of rebellion."

It's very unsurprising to me that these same people who go on and on about how young a character is and how they are made for "horny men" never stop to consider ACTUAL disgusting sexualized children in media (like I'm talking under 12) and how they face abuse. And it's also pretty insulting to assume that a 15 year old is a child, when they are not. They are a minor. There's a reason we don't call three-year olds teenagers.

And look, not trying to say that this should become a free for all for people to make underaged girls looks extremely lewd. I can understand the issues with how the US tends to have these odd puritanical views yet hyper-sexualizes everything. But the point I'm trying to make is even when people go out of their way (especially women) to make these fantasies that are engaging and do get people to want to see more, that should be celebrated, but instead, every woman who is character designer who even makes a character with clevage is somehow reduced to being an evil "horny man".

It's like if a woman wants to be badass...she can't look even remotely like one.
