There's nothing wrong with making a character that has a bit of a generic look. I honestly kinda commend people who make their fursonas pretty basic. Using irl animal colors, avoiding hybridization, not adding wings, etc. I see tons of people complaining about the unnatural colors people slap on their fursonas. Them being a bit generic and simple can be a nice refresher. Selling them to your fans for at least $500 is a whole other story, however. There's a strange similarity to brands like Supreme who put minimal effort into their designs and sell them to these sheep at outrageous prices. When it comes to characters like this, just make your own that's similar. It's not hard and they're not these ultra unique sparkledogs. Nobody is gonna draw the correlation and if they do, it's not like it's gonna be a huge issue when the designs are so simple. Copies of characters are everywhere, even in professional works of fiction. The fact that they're saying "pay us for this character, but we still own it" is just insulting. Just save your money.

one's a furry porn character and the other is a clothing brand where third parties (not the seller itself) run up the prices

I mean, no shit, but they're still both overhyped shit people are for some reason willing to empty their accounts to get a hold of. Hell, with these characters they're selling off, it's the buyers making ridiculous bids that are driving up the prices. The auctions started at $1, which doesn't seem too bad when you're essentially renting the character instead of owning it. The main difference is that at least with the clothing brands you own what you bought. It's not like the people that made it or sold it to you are gonna say they can take it from you at any time so they can wear it, because that's essentially what these clowns are doing with those terms and conditions of theirs.

You only get the right to use his likeness in your shit. Hell technically, you could make a better porn game with Dustin and his assets (Assuming you also get access to them once purchased) and make more money off it than Amorous if it's good. This makes me wonder if you could add in the shit that Jason and Kab's do with him after his purchase into the work you own and sell him for potentiality way more without having to draw or pay for additional art.

Well, I guess the upside is you get those horrible jiggle animations from the game.

i could draw a better looking lion guy for $500 if they really want a generic lion fursona.

it’s just the flex they’re looking for. that’s why anyone bothered with buying these characters from their failed dating sim. but for those prices you’re better off buying your own custom character that you have full rights to and not a borrowed character.

I think getting tetanus would be a better upside than that.

But I mean really, he's so generic someone could go "Oh, neat, lion, 500 bucks? that's expensive, I'll just like, do the same kinda thing, with some piercings and different hair or whatever"

Designing a character is too hard of a process for his little brain. Evidence of this is how ugly Vergence is.

A friend recently bought a character design from an artist that was subtle, with natural colours and yet still eyecatching and admittedly, very cute. It was only $5.
I did the same some years ago, purchasing a design for $15 from an artist I had worked with before. Same deal: natural colours, yet eyecatching. Been the symbol of my exceptional adventures ever since.
For both, we recieved the raw image of the character. It's handed over COMPLETELY: no ifs, no buts, it's yours to do what you please. Most importantly, you also help put someone lesser known put some food on the table.

What goes through these people's minds to spend hundreds, or even thousands of dollars on a character they won't actually own, from people they could easily realise are scum, is unthinkable. Most likely a superiority complex, schoolboy style competition; "My sona was $1000, and is in a dating sim!".

Perhaps they think it'll earn them brownie points or popularity when in actuality, nobody gives a shit.

For Kab's sake, I hope it's the game. Doing a game and comic is downright retarded.
