The Fight To Make Games Accessible For Everyone - Or how Nintendo fucking hates the disabled

I also think it would be a better idea to make games marketed towards and designed for disabled audiences (like 2k and EA sports games!) rather then gulit devs into implementing disability support for everyone and everything.

I lost one of my hands in a freak fisting accident which puts me at a disadvantage when playing vidya. I can still play some games with special controllers like the Logitech G600 mouse. Bind some buttons and enjoy!

Granted some games like competitive FPS games are not playable at serious level but a lot of strategy, single player FPS and MOBA, amongst others, are easily playable as long as the controller/game makes it possible to bind keys.

I welcome innovative controllers to help disabled people but it should not come at the cost of development time. Not every game is suitable for every individual.

We need quality and skill based competitive games. It drives people to improve and think outside the box. Not mention the satisfaction you get when crushing a "normie" (cripple slang for able bods) with one hand.

Fuck forced inclusivity, it's not worth the cost of gameplay, fun and competition.

oh ffs is this why I'm seeing all this shit now about people having a seizure 15 years ago and now they can function perfectly fine in everything else EXCEPT being able to play videogames?

I'm all for controllers being able to be operated with by using one hand that's fine. But these retards are taking it a step further and are trying to cripple entire genres.

On one hand, some "disability" features are pretty minor or features that should be fucking standard. A few years ago in 2011 (before social justice bullshit was much of a thing), it took a disabled gamer's petition for EA to add in remappable controls to Dead Space 2, something that should honestly be standard in any game for reasons beyond just disabilities. Some games just have shitty controller/keyboard mappings to begin with.

Disability controllers also cost more for a reason as despite the bitching about it, it's because these controllers are niche products. They're not going to be as mass produced or sold in as many stores as a regular input device would.

Reading through the article the complaints seem to be about the lack of alternative controllers or the inability to remap controls in specific games and that's a fair complaint. I'm against gimping games for a fraction of the population though.

It can go a couple of different ways depending on other factors. I have no expectation of action games like Zelda or Splatoon to cater to cripples and their needs. On the other hand, there's this sweet interaction between a Legend of Grimrock developer and a disabled customer, where in development the point was raised that the on-screen UI arrows most people didn't use had some value to the disabled, so they added them in as a toggleable option in the span of 3 hours as a courtesy:

This works because the genre is slower paced and grognards support their own versus gangweed jokers on Fortnite. But anyways, fuck advocacy groups and find something within your means to play via social media, we live in an amazing age for cripples and gimps where they can wield a great deal of virtual freedom if they're willing to work for it. But like all things, most people can't get everything they want.

BrolyLegs would like to have a word with you about that.
I saw BrolyLegs brought up in a thread somewhere terrible during the Sekiro difficulty fiasco and nobody even acknowledged the guy, but laser-focused in on the fact that the poster used the clip of the gamer beating corrupted monk. Granted, maybe they shouldn't have 'used(?)' them to prove their point that disabled gamers are perfectly capable of speaking for themselves and don't need game journalists to be their mouthpiece, but holy shit nobody came close to broaching the topic of BrolyLegs. They were all too happy to ignore his existence as a positive in order to twist the narrative. It's just funny and sad realizing that they will absolutely erase other people's accomplishments if it doesn't fit with their narrow worldview.

The discussion can be had, but both sides need to be actively willing to have a discussion rather than name calling everyone who potential misgivings an ableist-fascist-idiot-other bad name-chud.

As long as they have colour blindness settings I don't give a fuck. Even then it only matters if differentiating colours is an important gameplay element. Spoiler; it almost never is.

I’ve honestly worried before that if I ever lost a hand/arm I wouldn’t be able to play video games or jerk off.

I’m sure it would suck, but it would be incredibly expensive to try to come up with a specialized game or peripheral that could be used by the crippled.

Fucking crowdfund it.

I've seen this Steven Spohn guy popping up a lot lately complaining about Sekiro; not a fan of his opinions but I'll agree that it sucks how many Nintendo games don't let you configure controls and have required motion controls. The only good thing motion controls have given us is gyro enhanced aiming. 'Waggle' and tilt inputs are always crappy and imprecise. That shit almost ruins the Mario Galaxy games.
