Actually, the left/DNC desperately wanted Obama to be an LBJL: a right cunt of a bastard who got shit done, and didn't care if he had to get himself dirty/bloody to do so.
This was one of the reasons you saw the DNC/left/media, after years of shitting on and scapegoating LBJ as a loser and embarrassment/failure due to Vietnam, HEAVILY try and rehab LBJ's public image during the Obama years. To provide justification for Obama being a corrupt bastard who got shit done, and as such was justified doing corrupt shit because results trump holding the moral high ground like a pussy.
They declassified the long suppressed tapes of LBJ finding out that Nixon was meddling in the peace talks (which LBJ only knew about, because like with Obama/Trump, LBJ was illegally spying on Nixon to try and stop him from being elected; though LBJ had enough self-awareness to realize he was helpless to stop Nixon due to him breaking the law spying on Nixon to begin with and even noted on the irony that LBJ would have to admit to committing treason to bust Nixon of the same crime) to blanket absolve LBJ of fucking up Vietnam and all of the soldiers he got killed.
They had media types go on and on about the Civil Rights Act, to try and bury the longstanding lead about how fucking up Vietnam as LBJ's legacy, to try and make LBJ a civil rights legend and that we should only talk about the Civil Rights Act when talking about LBJ and how it made him a great President we should all praise and worship, even more than Kennedy.
You even had the media shill LBJ hard: Bryan Cranston's first post-Breaking Bad project was an LBJ stage play that was so popular, that it got turned into an HBO movie of the week. Furthermore, House of Cards (which was originally was written as revenge fiction by a former Thatcher advisor who was pissed off that Thatcher him him with a purse in a fit of rage during the 1987 election) was re-envisioned for American sensibilities as LBJ fanfiction with the producers and Kevin Spacey explicitly stating that Frank Underwood was inspired by LBJ and not, say Trent Lott (a Republican Whip who resembled Francis Urquhart a lot more than LBJ, both politically and professionally in terms of Urquhart being Bush II's chief cat herder when it came to voting in the House of Representatives). Even the Ken Burns Vietnam War series, gave LBJ a far more favorable edit than most Vietnam retrospectives (though it also went out of it's way to give Nixon a similar favorable edit, to avoid playing favorites).

The left has given up, largely, on the notion that they can pass all-encompassing laws to ban guns and free speech, so have switched to trying to accomplish the same goals through social pressure of allied institutions, media, learning and entertainment, acting as if those laws were in effect.
Say the wrong thing? Well, Hollywood won't let you watch their movies, Universities won't let you on campus, and you can't post on the internet because nobody will give you a platform.
To the left, this was a genius move because since it was all private companies doing it, they couldn't challenge it, it was all legal, and the right would just have to live with it. That was progressiveness in a nutshell, social shaming to force the equivalent of dictatorial law because that damnable Constitution didn't let them actually pass those kinds of laws.
And frustrated people, tired of censorship and heavy-handed social shaming, defied them and revolted .
And so sure were the social tinkerers that this was impossible, they had no contingency for what to do if it didn't work.
Hence three straight years of name-calling, hoping they eventually find the words that will shame us back in line. Racist, Sexist, homophobe, transphobe, Russian and Bigot didn't work, but they're sure ONE will, they just have to find it before 2020.....
