one hypothesis as to why autism rates have gone up is because it's highly heritable and as software engineering/programming have become well paid careers, autistic men are more desirable mates (and thus wind up producing more autistic children). thanks to many of them voluntarily sterilizing themselves, autism rates should eventually go down.
