The "involuntary public figure" doctrine isn't a great thing to rely on. You don't get to defame someone, make them famous because of your own defamation of them, and then claim that the situation you deliberately caused somehow absolves you of responsibility for creating it.

Also amusingly for this "public figure" bullshit, the guy arguing he's a public figure couldn't even pronounce his name and the judge mistook Ty Beard for being Vic. That's how much of a hugely famous public figure he is. He is not a public figure in the sense that the President is or Tom Cruise is, by any stretch of the imagination.

The other kind of public figure is a limited public figure, and this is reserved for someone who deliberately injects themselves into a public controversy, such as for instance by incessantly tweeting about it. Guess who hasn't said a damn word about any of this since it began?

Vic has done nothing to involve himself in this and it has been a handful of scumbags who has incessantly tried to provoke him, drag him into it, and make him a figure of public abuse and a pariah. This is exactly the conduct defamation law targets, and the kind Texas juries in general, and Tarrant County juries in particular don't like very much.
