It really just depends on the child and the support they’re given, how early the birth was, if there are other congenital issue. Mostly what you tend to see are underdeveloped lungs and heart abnormalities. Those can lead to insufficient oxygen to the brain and then we have a brand new set of issues. One of my friends is a NICU nurse and I’ve never admired anyone more. I couldn’t do it. Faced with a baby weighing round about2 lbs. and dealing with the parent’s emotions and the physical needs of the child. It’s a Herculean task. A good number of those kids and parents aren’t lucky enough to walk out of there healthy, the one’s that are will generally see developmental delays. That’s not to say they won’t overcome them, but it’s an uphill battle in most cases. My cousin's little boy was a preemie, but other than being a little small, he's pretty much gotten where he's supposed to be. (He had to wear one of those helmets for a bit, to protect his soft spot, but that was all)
He's not quite two yet, but he really hasn't shown any signs of disability so far.
Of course, I’m talking about severely premature. Not just a month or so.
