Sorry, but that's not how therapy works. Nobody is sent to a psych ward unless they're an immediate danger to themselves or others. Half the people that have threads on here would be locked up otherwise.
And validation is exactly the reason the therapist (if she exists, I'm not claiming she does) would have told him that he clearly appears hurt in this situation. When someone rambles on and on like I suspect Russ would, it would be counterproductive to just let them spin in circles for the entire session, so a therapist might help the patient identify a feeling or an emotion (especially important for mindfulness-oriented therapists). This allows the patient to start recognizing their emotions and it creates trust when the patient sees the therapist gets them. It's the reason for the "How does that make you feel?" stereotype when it comes to therapy.
It doesn't matter that Russell is being invalidated at every turn because his endeavors are illogical and his feelings have no basis in reality. Therapists still have to validate his emotions and saying "It sounds like you feel very X by this" is exactly what they'd say. If he interprets this as "My therapist totally says that Taylor Swift caused me immense hurt and trauma lumps!!!" that's on him and it cannot be said that a therapist worth their salt would have him involuntarily committed.
