It isn't. Dedicated posters with unpopular beliefs can rack up hundreds every day. Subreddit Drama, which is sorta like here but for threads not individual lolcows, regularly has people from posted threads showing up and getting a few hundred negatives from arguing with people over why in the linked thread they weren't being a dipshit.

I think I netted -40 once from a poorly timed joke.
