Zac was a piece of shit sperg long before President Donnie T. Mike has turned into a Gen X boomer hippie.

Oh yes, he was, it was just never so staring you in the face obvious until now.

For what it's worth Zac was always my least favorite of the group, I didn't listen to the podcast for him but for Justin Sevakis and Mike Toole, who both gradually moved away from it, leading the podcast to become the "Zac and "Jacob" show" which didn't interest me.

Sevakis and Toole have really been what's disappointing, both seemed like fairly down to Earth guys, especially Toole, I'm honestly a little surprised how much of a, well, Tool, he's turned out to be.

Sevakis though made a really snide comment about fanservice anime and people that watch it on one episode of the podcast once that really rubbed me the wrong way, he said it with such contempt, like he truly hated it rather than it just not being his cup of tea.

Which first of all, he's gay, so what difference does it make to him? And second what kind of guy works for an anime website and can't at least begrudgingly respect all anime, even if not all of it is his personal cup of tea? To outsiders all anime is disreputable anyway, the fact that he's going to look down on some of it says bad things about him.

I did at least enjoy him sharing his experiences working for Central Park Media and John O'Donnell back in the day though.

Sounds like Sevakis can't get over some petty ass bully calling him gayboy for liking anime in high school. Shitheads who go off on nostalgia tangents and protesting anything new that comes out today usually are trying to impress people into watching anime like how they do, which is something spazzy immature weebs do all the time as well, but this time they come with baggage. Ain't my fault the majority of the States doesn't like animation they've not been culturally introduced to because it's not made for us specifically.

My big problem with ANN is from everything I can tell they pretty much "grew out" of anime over a decade ago, but they stay "involved" because it's where they pull their money from. Someone else still reading might have a different perspective, but I gave up when "Jacob" decided to do a weekly "episode recap/review" of Utena, a series that is over TWENTY years old but was treating it like it was airing brand new to help newer fans appreciate the LGBTQ indoctrination show. There was a lot of great anime in the 90s, but if all you want to talk about is that or video games, then you hardly qualify as a solid anime "news" site.
Haha, preach it brother.

I'm not going to lie; as much as video games are integral to the anime fan experience, I'll say that it goes moreso with the United States and Europe than Japan, and it's very evident of their eternal nostalgia past dweller mentality. I'm even going oldfag right now because I'm not going to lie, it was about the style in full than just whether it being just animation or another medium of entertainment, but that train's long left the station without us and the one that's on the main track is getting caught up with whatever's in Japan right now. The difference is, I can live with that. For them, I guess denial isn't just a river in Egypt. Hey, I wasn't the one going to shitty MST3K panels back in the early 2000s and wasting my time trying to be a "super fan" of anime like everyone else was.....

Incoming. Thanks Pedro.

Sevakis has kept it really, really vague, but yeah, he has touched on going through some shit growing up.

Of course everyone "goes through some shit" in life, the question is are you going to come out the other end of it a better person or are you going to let it turn you into a bitter, cynical asshole? Attitude is everything.

The irony is that in my opinion anime is something that has generally stayed pretty consistent in quality over the decades, anyone that has an "anime sucks now" attitude is definitely letting nostalgia cloud their judgement, there's not a huge gap between now and then.

It's been a far bumpier road for stuff like movies and video games by comparison, although there's still good movies and video games coming out even then.

Without power leveling too bad, I can tell you you are extremely accurate in your assessment of them. I was a bit close to these guys and the website as a whole many years ago. Nothing major, but enough to know if you were an intern you were a slave and had to kiss ass and worship the higher ups if you wanted any hope of being brought into their clique. Or fuck your way to the top like Hope did. That's how most new blood got promoted. All the new writers they hired like Micchy, Nick, Steve, and etc got hired because they were friends of Zac and the others on Twitter. They had open writing auditions and it just so happened all of them were a part of that clique prior to their applications. Same goes to the forum moderators who were also friends. They had their own little IRC chatroom back in the day to berate and make fun of people and shoot the shit. No idea if it's still around, I heard they had plans to make a discord awhile back.

Hope (Jacob) also did a huge expose on why Steven Universe was the best series ever and pushed it hard on ANN back in the late 2013s/2014s on ANN for the exact same reasons she gushes about Utena. But then, Hope is a fucking insane bitch who insists Ikuhara is a transwoman in denial and hopes he'll one day realize he's trans and embrace his troon self so she'll latch onto anything LGBTQAIPD+ related. I really can't stress enough how much of an insane bitch Hope is. I'm sure Lord Kat can back me up on this if he interacted with her to any extent at his time on TGWTG. I genuine think she has mental issues. Beyond the obvious ones, I mean.

Here's a good example to showcase the kind of mentality they have. They routinely insist they don't ban people for wrongthink, but that's only because they usually just put them on moderation instead. Which means all their posts have to be manually approved by a moderator before they show up in a topic. The trick is to just never approve their post. So they never get to post on the forums again and they get to still claim they never banned them: a double win for them and they get to keep that facade of neutrality.

I'll tell you straight up the only person there who's a decent person is Theron, and he he gets a lot of shit both onsite and off for his milquetoast and neutral opinions on things like fanservice, sexual content, and icky stuff. If I had to guess, they keep him around so they don't completely look like a joke website. They always give him the hugely popular shows like Sword Art Online, Cross Ange, and Rising of a Shield Hero which they know are huge and they can't outright shit on and he gives them decent to good scores because if anyone else on that site reviewed them they'd trash the hell out of them and pretty much lose any credibility they had in the anime community. Theron is the decoy while the rest of the staff talks complete shit on thier Twitters and blogs.

And yeah, they shit on YouTubers because they're pissed more people would rather watch Gigguk, Lost Pause, Digibrony Mother's Cuckment than their shitty blog articles. Which is why they resort to clickbait and shit like this Vic stuff. They've tried to diversity numerous times, each with spectacular failure. Their video streaming service failed, their webcomic failed, their attempt at their own YouTube channel failed. They just can't do it. Their upkeep is pretty small, and their writers get paid for shit so I wouldn't expect them to go out of business anytime soon though.

I was put on moderation there this week because I made jokes about Catherine game on the comments...

I'm amused that with zero insider knowledge I expected pretty much EVERYTHING you covered, especially the Ikuhara thing. 🤣 I forgot about their idiotic semi-autobiographical webcomic experiment.... ugh. But yeah, most of what they DO put on display is awkward at best and aggressively hostile at worst, so I can only imagine how bad it is BEHIND the scenes.

EDIT:
OMFG! LOL, this thread made me think to go look at Zac's twitter and OF COURSE he's gushing about the anime he played sad guitar to while writing bad poetry about his dark life in high school.
I love that their "anime experts" can only talk about Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Ghibli and whatever Ikuhara work they feel like jerking it to this week.

ANN is pretty much the shitty boomer anime website. Kiwi Farms is a better anime website and I say that in a genuine manner.

Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing.

And yeah, Theron is a decent fellow.

I will give ANN credit for on thing and that's their encyclopedia is damn useful, so it's not a totally worthless site.

Some more ANN memories.

I wish I could remember what podcast episode it was, but Zac was talking about anime convention memories and he recounted a story of a con in 2005 where he saw a teenage girl, probably 13, wielding a sign that said "kisses, 25 cents" and said it with such disgust.

While sure, maybe that is gross, he said it in that very pearl clutching SJW way, like how dare things get a little wild and crazy, the same mindset that's led to "cosplay is not consent" signs being posted everywhere at cons now.

I still feel like there's a shred of decency in Justin Sevakis though or to put it another way, he's clearly an intelligent fellow, unlike Zac who's simply an idiot and maybe if Justin had better friends and his life had played out a little differently, he could be a decent human being, I see some missed potential there.

I could be wrong, maybe I just go a tad easier on Justin because I communicated with him directly through PMs about his Central Park Media days and I respect that he took the time to do that for just some random user and not part of his "clique"

I mean, even if they're both knuckleheads I don't think it should be too controversial to say Justin is still less the knucklehead than Zac, should it? That's pretty clearly the case to me.

tbf, the sign days REALLY sucked, for a LOT of reasons. I don't think the 13 yr old doing it was worse than the 25 yr old. The 13 yr old was illegal if people acted on it, but the 25 yr old should've known better than to pull that kinda dumbassery, but both were morons. That said, I DO think its ridiculous to get outraged about dirty jokes directed at your person when you're at your 10th con where all this stuff is happening. I mean, if you're disgusted that the first DVD you bought at the comic shop is Hentai, then ok. But the 10th one says you're either ok with it, or at least totally complicit in the process.

Mentally, I think they're probably both about equal, Justin MAYBE less navel-gazing emo, but I don't know either well enough to say. Where Justin stands above is he comes across as more "casually dismissive" of people he doesn't respect or disagrees with. Zac is more "in your face" and aggressive about letting you know how much of a wrongthink idiot you are. Now they could be the same or polar opposites of this IN PERSON, but that's how they come across online.

I wouldn't know because I never made it out to a con in the 2000s, was too young and lived too far away from any of them.

Good, bad, it's something I wish I could have experienced purely out of curiosity, I'd be interested in anything you have to share about them if you want.

Also, that's a very good point about the difference between Justin and Zac, Justin simply doesn't get as worked up about it all, but I think there's simply more familiarity at play with Justin and me, I first discovered ANN by way of his Buried Treasure column circa 2009, I started listening to ANNcast in 2012, so I've followed Justin for longer than Zac, I've also like I said communicated directly with Justin a few times which has never happened with Zac, so that all makes me a tad more forgiving.

Cons were a LOT more "informal" back in the day. Ever since they've become "businesses" they're not remotely as fun. Here's an interesting piece of info talking about guests back then:
This is also an interesting comparison of dealing with "guests who don't like each other" 15 years ago

It's creepy and gross, but as far as I know, not illegal. I don't think the law generally calls kissing sexual unless it's being performed on breasts or genitals; otherwise, parents would go to jail for kissing their kids. Which, to be fair, maybe they should if they're some weird gross person who thinks it's cute to kiss their kids on the lips.

Yeah, I don't think you'd get arrested for simply kissing a 13 year old, provided it was consensual, certainly people would give you funny looks though.

i'd argue that depends entirely on how you define kiss; i saw some idiots on the bus the other day that were "kissing" so sexually i'm pretty sure she could have gotten pregnant

I agree, a peck on the cheek would be fine, especially since she's carrying a sign saying "kisses for 25c", but I'd still be keeping an eye on any guys who took her up on that offer.

Sorry Dom. I've heard from a little birdy that Justin had tried to sexually come onto someone at a convention.

I'd also say something about sexual responsibility and this country, but that goes into some debate territory. TL;DR, most anime convention teens are also exploring their chemistry, but I'd be cautious too for creeps.

Oh, and I also have someone fun I want to introduce very soon.

Fun fact, his name starts with Sean. And he's our mystery guest I've talked about in my detailed history of Anime News Network. Stay tuned.
