Diseased Shippers, Anti-Shippers, and Shipping Wars - When fictional characters fucking each other is a political statement

I remember all the "Moffat is a bad writer for queerbaiting, John and Sherlock are totally gay for each other!" stuff. A lot of those people felt personally betrayed by the man because they thought he intended Johnlock to be canon all along and was hinting at it throughout the entire show, hence the vitriol (And a proto version of the Sheith shippers claiming they feel betrayed by the Voltron people). Seriously, there was even a whole "Johnlock conspiracy" about it.

I'm also fairly sure they badmouthed Mark Gatiss, the actor for Mycroft and one of the script writers, and called him straight for not "indulging" their shippy whims. Gattiss, ftr, IS actually gay and has been married to a dude (iirc another actor) for at least 10 years... but that means nothing to the fandom because he didn't give them their ship.

(The less said about their treatment of Martin Freeman's and Benedict Cumberbatch's ladies, the better.)

Also doesn't the JohnLock Conspiracy have a thread here in Kiwifarms?

This is a cross-post from the Voltron thread.

I got this thought last night right as I was falling asleep, but it's a legitimate question that needs to be asked: How many of these fans who're whining about their ship are actual fans? I'm serious, if they're actual fans of the series their OTP's from, they wouldn't let their ship sinking get them this upset about everything, especially when fan fiction is just a form of harmless entertainment. Voltron, for example, has become extremely infamous for its shipping discourse, which take up the majority of the discourse in the fandom. A lot of these Klance (and others, but mostly Klance) shippers claim they liked it up to a certain point, and while there are good criticisms about the final season(s), most of it just boils down to "BUT MUH GAYS". Some of them seem to realize there's so much more to the show than just representation, such as the lore, soundtrack, animation, character arcs/development, designs, etc. that make the show what it is, and they do appreciate those at the very least.

But the shippers? The ones who're whining and throwing tantrums over their OTP not becoming canon? The ones who're making their own AU(s) to pass it off as canon? Are we sure they're actual fans and weren't just parasites latching on to it because the show had pretty boys? The same goes for every other series, especially those with rabid yaoi fangirls even if the series isn't that super gay.

Just makes me think of this one piece of writing advice from many years back that rings true:
798711

Without having seen Voltron, I can at least tell the show didn't fail in this regard. Yet the shippers, ironically, don't see it that way because they're just that adverse to conflict. Apparently in their eyes, problems and character flaws literally go away the moment the balls touch.

That piece of advice is very true, yes. Most shows that fans whine about the ships for usually ARE quite good in that regard. ATLA, Voltron, Steven Universe, Korra.

Most fans will quote this sort of advice or paraphrase it or go on about it when it comes to the ships they don't like (Allurance, Kataang, Maiko, Ichihime, Korrasami). But when it comes to THEIR OTP, if they're not joined at the hip and having no life outside each other, they're OOC and the canon writers are Bad. (Sheith, Klance, Zutara, Ichiruki) It's the same thing when they say "the story doesn't have TIME for this character to cry and whine, they're stalling the plot" when it comes to a character they hate being sad for more than five seconds (Orihime), but when their fave is canonically the type to press on and not sit and weep, they post a million LET THEM GRIEVE, THIS IS BAD WRITING screeds all over the place (Shiro).

I know retarded fans and shippers only care about good writing when it suits their needs, but every time they prove it it just amazes me even more how stupid and hypocritical they can be.

I mean in the case of the RWBY fandom, all they ever talk about is shipping because that's all that show has going for it and the writers themselves pander to and cater to the shippers over actually writing a good story or good character interaction, so shipping all but dominates the fandom. And Korra brought its incessant shipping wars on itself by shoehorning in Korrasami and writing the Mako-Korra relationship as bone-headedly as possible.

But to me, the Voltron shit just exist in the same continuum as the infamously heated anime shipping wars. They draw similar crowds of autists and speds (even if weebs/fujoshis and tumblrinas don't completely overlap, their "afflictions" are similar enough for it to not matter) and those autists will be autistic about shit.

@SnowBall, the FE: Three houses game hasn't even been released and the ship whining has already begun. Because it SEEMS that M!Byleth has less same-sex S-supports than F!Byleth, so that means ~queer men are SUFFERING and DYING and IN PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAINNNNN!!!! for a mere videogame :story:

Dude, years ago we FE fans could barely hope to have official same-sex couples. And now that we have them, these fan babies are still complaining.

(Also, "queerbaiting"? Bitch WHEN?)

Aren't you romancing characters who are/were your students? Seems kind of sexist of the game to imply its more acceptable and not a problem when it's lesbians.

Seriously, what is the point of this when most of the same people will call the whole concept problematic and claim they're trying to promote pedophilia? (Remember, even if the characters are adults after the timeskip, most people in this vein would still consider it as bad as pedophilia for waiting for the characters to grow up.)

You can smell the entitlement a mile away. And do we even know for sure that Lindhart is the only m/m romance option? Maybe they just released info on the lesbians first. Sounds like this person is jumping to conclusions before we have full information on the characters and support list.

Me, I'm just waiting for the fake feminists to imagine the worst possible scenarios for Edelgard that proves Fire Emblem hates women.

This is why you should never cater to these people. Nothing is ever good enough for them.

Watch the game reveal more mlm options and they get slammed for being "too masculine" or "not flamboyant enough" or "not pretty" or "not a pure sunshiny cinnamon roll."

These reactions are the reason why I am dreading any announcements of the next Rune Factory and Story of Seasons games. Because no matter how gay marriage is going to be handled in those games everyone will get butt hurt as proven by this.

I can't wait for December when all these sperglords who still can't get over it try to start a mourning party and no one comes. "Remember how one year ago the evil straights betrayed us? And we still don't have the true ending? And LM and JDS still won't kiss our asses in apology?" And everyone else is busy with the She-Ra ship wars or wanting to fuck the new Pokemon gym leaders or something.

This comment is hilariously fitting, considering this tag: https://twitter.com/hashtag/sheithversary?src=hash

It's been a year ever since the infamous scene where Keith had to fight the infamous Shiro clone and told him "I love you" while trying to deal with him. I don't blame Sheith fans for seeing it as fodder for their ship at all, but now that the ship has been sunk for almost half a year, having them "celebrate" the anniversary of that episode comes off as kinda pathetic and the pretty artwork coming from it does NOT exactly change my mind...

.... Aaaaand shit like this doesn't really help. :story:

So this is old news but bears sharing because it's so delightfully retarded. Debbiechan of Bleachness fame ragequit Bleach forever in 2017 with this spectacular meltdown of a fic. 15,000 words of "Orihime is a skank for not doing what I wanted her to, so she should die" disguised as an Ishida/Renji love story. It reminds me of people who quit their jobs by pulling their pants down and taking a shit on their boss's desk.

"We love Allura so much, we edit her out of scenes where she and her canon love interest cuddle together so we can use these scenes for OUR shipping purposes that involve her lover! Oh, and BTW do not repost even when we're altering the work of someone else to delete the icky girl in it."

Heard Pidge is also being taken out of canon scenes' screencaps (this time by Sheith fans) but I haven't been able to find those. Thank fucking God, seeing how this fandom's "love" for Allura is only for window dressing was annoying enough.

They only love her if they can use her for SJW brownie points and as long as she's not kissing the hot boy. Otherwise she's a badly written Mary Sue.

I'm beginning to think you're as obsessed with this fandom as they are with their ships.
