Disaster 'Erosion in acceptance' of LGBTQ people among young Americans, survey finds - NBC

Young Americans ages 18-34 are increasingly uncomfortable around LGBTQ people in personal situations, like learning a family member, doctor, or child’s teacher is LGBTQ.

In its annual “Accelerating Acceptance” survey, GLAAD found that people ages 18-34 are increasingly uncomfortable in “personal scenarios” with LGBTQ people — like learning that a family member, doctor or child’s teacher is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
Nationwide, the support for “equal rights for the LGBT community” remained stable at 80 percent, GLAAD’s survey found. But the biggest drop in support identified by the LGBTQ rights group was among the youngest Americans.
In 2016, 24 percent of respondents age 18-34 said they would feel uncomfortable with a LGBTQ family member; by 2018 that rose to 36 percent — about one in three. A similar rise was measured among the youngest group of respondents who say they would feel uncomfortable to learn their child was receiving an LGBTQ history lesson at school, from 27 percent to 39 percent.
"With the knowledge that erosion in acceptance was primarily happening among younger males, GLAAD launched a program dedicated to working with the video game industry on LGBTQ inclusion, to bring LGBTQ characters and stories to a world where male audiences were consuming content," said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, in a press release announcing a selection of survey findings.
This marked shift is reflected in the shrinking of a group of respondents that GLAAD classifies as “allies” — those who say they are “very” or “somewhat” comfortable in all seven interpersonal situations tested. In 2016, 62 percent of young men ages 18-34 reported feeling comfortable in all seven LGBTQ situations; in 2018, that number dropped to 35 percent, although GLAAD did not say which or how many interpersonal situations saw a decline in support.
"The younger generation has traditionally been thought of as a beacon of progressive values," said Ellis said. "We have taken that idea for granted, and this year’s results show that the sharp and quick rise in divisive rhetoric in politics and culture is having a negative influence on younger Americans"
GLAAD’s findings support other recent surveys, including the PRRI survey, that show generalized support for LGBTQ equal rights remains strong. Their March survey found that nearly 70 percent of all Americans, with majorities across all religions, support “broad nondiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.”
A recent poll from the Williams Institute at UCLA found about half of voters are less likely to support a candidate because they are over 70. Just 34 percent of respondents said they would be less likely to support a candidate because he or she is gay.
According to a review of Gallup polling about homosexuality, first queried in 1977, support for gay people continues to increase. In 1977, just 13 percent of Americans believed being gay or lesbian is innate; today that number is 49 percent. In 1977, 14 percent of people believed gay and lesbians should be allowed to adopt; today it is 75 percent. In 1977, 56 percent of respondents said gay people should have equal employment rights; today, 93 percent believe that.

I think part of the reason that corporates glom on to LGBTQQIAP2+ or whatever it is this week is because it requires no real effort yet gets you massive virtue signal points. Just stick a rainbow in the logo and mouth some platitudes about how you celebrate diversity and carry on gouging the punters as normal. Maybe chuck some cash at having a float in the Pride parade for extra marketing.

They get asspats from the usual suspects. But if I were LGBTQQIAP2+ I would object to this. My sexuality is private and personal to me. It is not a figleaf by which you can wokewash your brand.

Back in 2012/2013 I started seeing the verbage change from "you must tolerate" to "you must accept" and thatwas when my patience with LGBT started dropping like a rock.

In my mind tolerance is the equivalent of people behaving well on public transportation. People get on the bus, people get off the bus, nobody bothers anybody. People may choose to stand up so a pregnant woman, or elderly person can sit, but they aren't castigated openly if they don't. Dirty looks at most.

The whole acceptance movement on the other hand, is the equivalent of somebody getting on the bus, coming over to where I'm sitting and screaming at me because that's their favorite seat, and I'm a bigot if I don't get up and stand nownownownownow! Not only am I not going to want to give you my seat now, even if you're on crutches, but I'm going to hope you get hit by a bus.

So basically this without the cop uniform?

In the future, when some alien archeologists are uncovering the ruins of our society, they'll probably look at old South Park episodes and assume that they were created by some prophets or time travelers from the future.

Personally, over the past couple of decades, I have gone from laughing at fundamentalist Christians for holding signs saying "God Hates Fags" at funerals...

... to laughing harder at woke LGBTQ+ activists for marching in support of Islam...

... and now looking forward to the side-splitting laughter I'll experience when the local ISIS chapter starts tossing faggots from nearby rooftops.

Watching that episode through the lens of today's politics is just amazing.

Truth. They even predicted the "internalised bigotry" accusation against LGBT people who think that maybe giving kids irreversible puberty blockers behind their parents' backs is not such a hot idea.

Surat al-A'raf said:
We also sent Lut : He said to his people : "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds."

Sunan Abu Dawood said:
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: If you find anyone doing as Lot's people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done.

Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has also been transmitted by Sulaiman b. Bilal from 'Amr b. Abi 'Umar. And 'Abbad b. Mansur transmitted it from 'Ikrimah on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas who transmitted it from the Prophet (Peace be upon him). It has also been transmitted by Ibn Juraij from Ibrahim from Dawud b. Al-Husain from 'Ikrimah on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas who transmitted it from the Prophet (Peace be upon him).

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet cursed effeminate men; those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners of women) and those women who assume the manners of men, and he said, "Turn them out of your houses." The Prophet turned out such-and-such man, and 'Umar turned out such-and-such woman.

Maybe South Park is the answer? The latest generation of young adults, raised on South Park, are conditioned to be oppressive to LGBTQ+ people and other marginalized groups!

Who would have thunk that a show I was introduced in the mid-1990's, by a guy who would later stop watching it because they did something to offend his Christian beliefs, would go on to create a new generation of homophobic nazis?

Lmao. They had an entire episode wailing about trump's victory (possibly more).
NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Watching that episode through the lens of today's politics is just amazing.

When people look at these things and think they were being prescient.... no... they live in california. They didn't predict it. They just saw it. It just wasn't mainstream yet.

They self-censored their muhammed episodes. No, they are not the answer, they are comedians. Like every good jester they tell the funny truth and get away with it because they are not really to be taken seriously.

I look forward to ever-increasingly rabid condemnation and extreme demands made of white people to be more and more and more "accepting" (whatever that means) because they think it would be the worst thing in the world to openly admit that anti-LGBT sentiment runs rampant far more in black, latino, and muslim communities than it has among white people for many decades. White people who are already fucking woke need to keep emptying their wallets for the cause because asking a black man to donate a penny would be asking too much.

They self-censored their muhammed episodes.

They didn't censor "Super Best Friends". But Comedy Central refused to let them show the Family Guy cutaway gag in "Cartoon Wars" where Peter gets given a football helmet covered in salmon from Mohammed, and "200" and "201" were all but memory holed. The latter had Kyle's "I learned something today" speech bleeped in its entirety.

They ended up supporting the censorship of 200 and 201, saying that it that it wasn't worth putting people's life at risk. Super best friends was pulled from showing in the future as well after those episodes.

LGBTQIA+WTFBBQ jumped the shark. They’re 6 lakes over at this point and naturally people are starting to push back because the degeneracy has gone too far.

I’m talking about “trans” kids, non-binary, autistic drag kids being exploited, adult trannies shrieking suicide if you don’t fuck them or pay for their dick chop, etc. it’s become a clown show and normal gays and lesbians just want to move on with their lives and be seen as normal.

Hard to do that with the insane people trying to take control of the asylum and shit all over common sense. I’ve been saying it for awhile but the next generation could wind up being more conservative in many areas as a result of recent feminist movements and diversity/inclusion at all costs.

I guarantee that from ages 18 to their death, those kids will vote GOP straight ticket every time.

EDIT:

normal gays and lesbians just want to move on with their lives and be seen as normal.

A thousand times this. I mean, they can marry, they get the same tax exemptions and inheritance provisions for same as straight couples, they can adopt children, it's illegal to discriminate against them in the workplace etc. What's left to fight for? Hence, the constant bolting of things onto the end of their acronym.

Let’s just extrapolate this to pride month in general.

I think we’ve reached a point where the “silent majority” in the West is more-or-less accepting of the LGB. Even if, deep down, they’re still a bit uncomfortable with it, it’s not like they’re gonna openly harass any gay person they see. And, like, when they see rainbows plastered everywhere for an entire month, their reaction isn’t gonna be visceral disgust, but just minor annoyance at its over saturation.

But that minor annoyance is literally all it takes. Minor annoyance of politics being shoved everywhere - minor annoyance of being told that politics *should* be shoved everywhere because “I live with being LGBT every day, it’s not soemthing YOU should be able to ignore” - minor annoyance over soulless corporations shilling pride because *not* doing it would be a death sentence - minor annoyance over *any* criticism being blamed on ANGERY homophobes. One’s response to these minor annoyances usually isn’t to think “hey, maybe I should be more woke”, it’s “these people are fucking crazy, give an inch and they want a mile”.

Even among woke leftists, intersectionalism is rotting the purity of their beliefs. When you have to support *everything* publicly, chances are you’re not doing it because you truly believe it, deep down - but because you feel that you *have* to, out of fear of ostracism from your woke circles.

Intersectionalism and identity politics are ultimately self-defeating because while they’re great at building up a web of woke lefties signal-boosting fringe opinions until they seem like the majority viewpoint, it’s fucking *awful* at actually convincing normal people of their goals, and you absolutely *need* the support of those masses for any extended duration of power.

It is the work of five minutes to photochop a rainbow into your logo. That is not taking any form of a courageous stand given how mainstream LGBT things are nowadays. It is wokewashing at its lowest and most contemptible. But they act like it's a major sacrifice and they're risking their very businesses.

The best response IMO to something like, "why don't you have a rainbow flag in your window? Are you some sort of bigot?" is, of course, in a deadpan tone, "Fucking hell yes. I hate pooves, dykes, queers, and trannies. I can't stand the idea of anyone preferring to use the main sewer of the human body as a playground even when it doesn't concern me and if any drag queen tried to tell stories to my children I swear I'll do time. I don't want to know about 71 genders and I wouldn't give polyamory the cheddar off my dick. And you can fuck off with your Arse Injected Death Sentence as well. Now get out my house."

I'd like to thing it's simply the politics. But I think it's corporation using politics as a tool. The religious right got too much pushback in the 90's and early 2000's. But if the megacorps get on the side of progressivism and leftism, you can do no wrong. You can offer your children up as sex workers and you can get away with it because megacorps and media institutions and individuals can get away with anything if you label the detractors as Nazis.

It's the ultimate marketing scheme for anything. You will watch the Nicklodean child porn channel and like it, otherwise you are a Nazi who denies human rights. And who wants to be a Nazi? Not you.... right?

It was predicted back in the 1980s that, as multinational corporate power consolidated, it would eventually challenge the existing power structure of national government. That has been happening for years now, but only in this decade has it reached a point where these companies are taking on the idea of internal governance or corporate citizenship. The primary means they have to promote the Good of corporate citizenship is by appealing to these impulses of forced morality. They are Better than the government. They make people be Better. They fight the Bad Thoughts. They will protect you from the Bad government. It's a "benevolent" fascism that loves to use superficial diversity as a smokescreen against the truth that they are unbelievably conformist and oppressive everywhere beneath the surface.

The most recent example of Corporate Citizenship I can think of, straight from a friend who "discovered" that he was trans at 37, is that Salesforce (famous for wanting to ban all firearms) offered to pay for moving expenses for any employee working in a state that passed anti-abortion laws. As if the people making >2x the average US salary were in terrible threat of losing their access to baby termination. It's 100% "Look at us, we're moral. We're better than the bad government. Surrender your life to our service."
