My money's on option #1. She knows damn well what she's doing and it's all about the money. She claims he's been "gay since birth." He's a prop and a means to an end. She gives zero fucks about that kid's health or safety beyond ensuring he remains "serviceable" for the next client when the last one shuffles off to his car straightening his pants and whistling. Being "shocked" that a pedophile is openly lusting after this kid is just part of the show. It wouldn't surprise me if the author of that piece was a satisfied customer, not just a perv from a distance.
Like most porn stars figure out early on (at least the clever or observant ones), she knows the films (documentaries in his case) and live shows are just advertisements for the real services -- private one-on-ones for pay -- and the tips are just a bonus.
This kid won't make it to adulthood. He's already drugged out of his mind to keep him compliant in the first place, he looks emaciated and I don't believe for one moment that his "clients" are gentle with him. If the drugs don't kill him, a pedophile will. NAMBLA were literally the first American membership organization in the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, and remained so until 1994. It doesn't get more mainstream than that. It was never a slippery slope to start with.

I personally find the situations where there's an assumption of "wholesome" to be far more troubling. the church, the pageants. Desmond/drag kids are in a horrifying situation to be certain, but there's scrutiny and suspicion directed at that crowd in general (for plenty reasons) so it's more likely there are legal eyes on the situation. with the more "Christian mom" sexualizing-kids activities, molesters get away with harming hundreds of kids before there's even a suspicion.
churches, dance/acrobatics, sports, pageants, all lend themselves to kids being sexualized and placed in vulnerable situations with no outside scrutiny or supervision.
at least people are paying attention to this and suspicious of it, that's a step up from the rest.
it's all horrible.

Just asking the bigger question of does he have a future seeing as how CPS, who'll send an inspection out if they hear so much as a rumor a parent owns a gun or may be conservative but won't do shit for this kid because of how "progressive" he is.

The biggest "mercy" anyone could ever give him is to free him from his psychopathic "caretakers," get him away from the deviants cheering for this debauchery, introduce foster or adoptive parents who'll actually give a shit about him, put him in some normal clothes and let him be a kid again.
This kid should be worrying about whether he's remembered to mow the lawn enough over the spring and summer to earn the vacation to Disney World he was promised in exchange, not how many doses of designer drug X he needs to ask for before he meets with his next "papa bear" tomorrow night so he doesn't hurt too much to go on stage an hour later.

If he ever gets out of this shit I would not be shocked at all if he joins the Westboro Baptist Church or becomes a skin head.
Call me crazy but if he isn't naturally gay I would not put it past Wendy to try conversion therapy on him with not a sense of tinge of hypocrisy.

No one knows when to stop anymore. I blame the money and the lust for power and unwillingness to admit when things are done and obsolete. After gay marriage and general acceptance there isn't really a point in things like pride parades and the like. The problem is we have organization who now have a vested interested in continuing because they make so much money so it'll be hard for them to let it go.
After general acceptance of gay people and the like the average person should have started see things like a gay pride parade as silly as a straight pride parade. Part of acceptance is being gay should have become something like being lefthanded but they're torn between those who want to live their lives in peace and those who want to continue the kink carnival.

Unfortunately the evidence for people being "born this way" has never really turned up. It remains most likely that sexuality is a combination of biological and environmental factors. So it's not like they will grow up and be clearly revealed as obviously straight and cis. Having spent their whole lives being strongly conditioned to be gay or trans, they will likely at best be confused bisexuals well into adulthood.
