The modern left speaks institutional power to truth. That being said, she may be sick of old white men, I'm sick of hearing from kvetching old yentas and their gentile look alikes. I hate that I have to live in a country with these people, why can't me and all my friends have our own country somewhere else?

"So I ran into this white oppressor the other day, and he took notice of my T-shirt that I paid for with money (but in a way that isn't capitalism, which I hate and is bad). He immediately, without provocation, said all the evil white male things on the list in our encyclopedia. Luckily I was there to shut him down by acting like a stereotypical black woman, which is usually not okay, but as one of the Good Whytes™ I was able to exempt myself."

While the USSR did get into space, the United States managed to put a man on the moon. And iirc, didn't both nations pretty much get the rocket tech as spoils of war after the Nazis were beaten? Even then, the comparisons all just come off more as a dick measuring contest if one doesn't really bother to note the downsides the USSR had.

We got Werner von Braun, who gave us an incredible leg up on the USSR and whose engineering philosophy is probably the single largest reason that we never lost a single astronaut during a space mission until Challenger.

Not to mention that the only reason the USSR was even able to maintain the pace that it did was because western nations were giving/selling them technology and machinery.
