The mom's "trans rights are human rights" getup is hilarious. I knew a mother/son duo who reminds me now so much of this pair, except in that case, the mom outweighed her big fat son by a hundred pounds, easy. In that case, mom had pulled the strings to get her baby elected mayor of a tiny town.
It was just as funny as you'd think it'd be, with the exceptional mayor telling the police chief to aim his gun at people in meetings who said things he didn't like, and the city council sometimes just making motions to go have the meeting in another room while Mayor Exceptional Individual continued ranting in the main room, to nobody except his always-appreciative mom.
I guess the only way this isn't funny is if Jonathan is using coercive control and abuse to keep his mom in line, which would explain her haggard appearance and total subjugation to his desires. That'd make it kind of sad. I have no doubt that Jonathan is capable of making a frail old woman fear for her life. The "sounds like you're stressed out, maybe someone should disregard what you think because of your medical condition" line of sleaze he used on Charlotte sounded practiced.
If I've got JY's number, I'd bet he's been keeping a dossier of alleged abuse by his mother against him, for some time. He's got this as his nuclear option if she ever pisses him off too much, and she knows it exists. Jonathan doesn't just let people he depends on exist in a non-controlled state. If his mother is dutifully doing everything he says, it's likely based on his actions toward other women that he's found a way to extort this compliance from her.
