i'm too lazy to dig through my copy of the grout but they've been pulling this bullshit for awhile. musicology as a study needs to be axed or given a long bath in lye and most of its "research" papers need to be burned in a worldwide ceremony and all (ethno)musicologists need to be tarred, feathered, and have their pants pulled down and called nerds imvho. it went from people like bartok doing actually interesting work and actually making music with the shit he researched to people like this (not to mention my socialist friends who ended up actually going into musicology) who think, among other things, that because women weren't socially permitted to perform onstage (let's not forget the entire shakespeare gender debacle relation) that every man in europe was a closeted fag, among other historiographical, genealogical, and hermeneutical disasters. only the germans are closeted.
