Weekend Reading Project Update 2 - "Writer Denied" Theme Deconstruction
Okay now for part 2 in my deconstruction of the Fox Familiar. All cited works will be in spoilers along with in-depth commentary, so the thread stays concise.
Anyway that is the first theme deconstruction. Also, please critique my work if you think something is wrong or see something I haven't. This only works with your feedback so chime in.
If this is too aggressive, speak up too. I am not trying to hurt anyone. I just want to help others understand who they are dealing with.
Okay now for part 2 in my deconstruction of the Fox Familiar. All cited works will be in spoilers along with in-depth commentary, so the thread stays concise.
One thing about her work that struck me is how seriously she takes the endeavor of Fan Fiction. My first tip off that this was more than just idle fun or a hobby of enjoyment was this paragraph:
Notice here that she is talking shop and industry, this is a hobby to many people and she ignores that. Here she is bringing in the companies and the legal aspects of this. She bolds and italicizes Creative Licence and Fair Use, which tells me her perspective is about making this a serious effort. She learned the rules and takes it very seriously.
One does not start learning the rules of a trade like this, and taking it this seriously unless they want to go pro.
So why with all this seriousness towards fan fiction, does she instead spend her time on a fanfiction website flaming "people aging from 6-years-old to 60", rather than writing professional fan fiction?
My answer came here in this bolded and italicized line, "sheer number of people writing and making it". That indicates that she is angry that there are so many people working in this domain, a domain that she takes seriously. A domain that she learned and spent a lot of time and effort to learn. It soon became apparent that this was not just about taking things seriously, she wanted the competition out. If she is so good why force them out, the answer is because she feels that her work will not be noticed. Also with the fact that the publishing industry is awash with books and manuscripts, it is easy to guess that if she did submit something. No one ever saw it.
Also with Amazon selling fan fiction through kindle, why not try to sell it there. The answer is that she believes it will never sell now.
Her next paragraph started to reinforce this.
Notice the first bolded and italicized line. She takes cannon very seriously. Like any professional fan-fiction writer would. Notice right after this statement she drops the refined mask and regresses in speech to a teenager. This is an emotional statement. This is a kid talking not an adult. She badly wants to be a successful adult. Yet here, in talking trade she regresses. It indicates a trigger.
Notice the second bolded and italicized word, plagiarism. Here she is taking a leap and calling someone a thief for creatively changing cannon. This type of leap indicates to me that she takes this very seriously and wants anyone who does not to leave fan-fiction writing. She thinks that anyone who does not take this seriously, is taking something from her. Remember, she takes this seriously, and after the regression from first line it is apparent; she takes it personally.
She also mentions transformers and it indicates she may have written a Transformers Fanfic. She seems hurt by the movies and mentions this type of fandom more than any other in her intro.
The next paragraph was where she seemed to regain her composure and place her mature mask back on in the first sentence.
Here she is mentioning her cause for advancing the upright in literature again. She has composure here. She is calm here. She can make snarky references here. Notice that her vocabulary and tone mature, somewhat. As if her purpose hides her sadness.
From this point I began to see a very strong theme and deconstructed the rest of the intro using it, starting back at the beginning. One of her lines stood out and supported my guesses.
This line began to become clearer with the revelation from those 2 following paragraphs. Here she first mentions "that Special Snowflake bubble". She has used this line a number of times in her flames as well. When you start to see everything else, she was likely once "that Special Snowflake", herself. She uses that phrase a lot in her flames. As if she wants them to feel something. Something she had felt.
She also starts using alliteration and esoteric references. She wants to the reader to know that she is intelligent and well versed. Her alliteration though is slightly regressed, which tells me she gets triggered by fangirls too. You can tell when it is something personal, her speech regresses.
A following paragraph reinforces the concept that she considers her work to be a serious undertaking.
Here she considers herself as skilled and valuable as med students. She thinks of herself as educated. Her tone is more calm and mature. Notice she still wants people to stay in their “discipline” and out of potentially hers.
Then the numbered bullets also stood out:
Here she is describing the stories that she considers beneath serious writing. Another question to ask though is why be so concerned about them. Unless as when you look up to the points above. She considers this to be competition or at the very least crowding the market and preventing her work from getting noticed.
Then this bullet stuck out, here she talks about "Horrible and Talentless Authors and their fans":
She likely despises "subpar" authors that have fans. They are competition to her. When they have fans, she does not. Notice her tone regresses and her mask of maturity does as well.
Here in point 9 her tone regresses again when talking about cannon:
Her tone regressing here points to the fact that to her Fan Fiction writing is more than just professional. It is personal and this points to a likely source of trauma. It becomes clear here that she was horribly hurt and rejected. Likely from failing at fan fiction writing.
On these final last bullet points she regresses again when talking about Fan Fiction. She even offers a glimpse into her soul. She really loves fan fiction and she takes it seriously.
Here she regresses into rage. It is as if again she feels that something was taken from her rather than someone else.
Here she shows her love after the first paragraph. Fan Fiction is something she takes seriously and loves. She then sadly descends back into the pain that hurt her. She does not like people who do not take Fan Fiction serious enough to pursue professionally. The details matter to her, because for a professional writer they mean everything.
The fact that she has these regressive moments and takes her work so personally hints at a traumatic incident with it. The fact that she concentrates on flaming other writers rather than promoting her own work, hints at the fact that she feels threatened by them.
Do not think that a disclaimer on how you don't own your fandom or that you don't make money off of it protects you. You are protected by Creative License and Fair Use. That means that you can use these characters that are not yours without getting sued or prosecuted under the law. While lawyers and the courts have better things to do, there are those who want to make fanfiction a protected right, and we can just see how that's going. Sure, companies know there is fanfiction and that they can't do much, but that is because of the sheer number of people writing and making it. Not all of them are impressed by it, either.
Notice here that she is talking shop and industry, this is a hobby to many people and she ignores that. Here she is bringing in the companies and the legal aspects of this. Her next paragraph started to reinforce this.
I catch you making characters OOC for no reason, you will be flamed. And since you have no rights, I have every right to tell you that your story is a piece of shit, how and why it is, and offer some insults to your being. This last part is usually reserved for when you really piss me off. Since you don't own these characters, you can't make them do whatever you want, because if you try to, you're making it your property whilst acknowledging that the main work isn't really yours. Know what that is? Plagiarism in the extreme, copyright violation in the lesser stages. I've had a few try to tell me that canon doesn't matter at all, and to this I say: yeah right. Even Star Trek and Star Wars fans don't like certain shows or films because it violates canon, and they'll point it out. The only exception I will make to canon violation is when the canon itself is retarded or beyond logical boundaries. Transformers movies, I am looking at you.
Notice the first bolded and italicized line. She takes cannon very seriously. Like any professional fan-fiction writer would. Oh, one last thing: since you have no rights, (said link offers more info on the debate, but confirms what I already know) that also means your stories, if they violate the rules, get removed. I'm sorry that your deep, psychological story about how Sam and Dean Winchester having a man-train with every angel in existence was removed and that it was a violation of your 'rights'. Some people will call a spade a spade, and if you write porn, expect to see me. You'll probably also be purged, because back in 2012, the FBI finally got its gears in motion and removed a good chunk of stories from this site. The reason? Child pornography. Written by adults and teens. Don't think the kids are at fault because these days, kids as young as five start masturbating, so nothing is innocent anymore.
To punish the oppressors of humanity is clemency; to forgive them is cruelty. - Maximilien Robespierre[B1]
Looks like it's going to be a fun night. Looks like it's going to be a long night. - Remilia Scarlet
You are not worth the dust which the rude winds blows in your face! - King Lear - the Duke of Albany
Pity is treason. - Robespierre
...You may be here because I flamed you, or popped that Special Snowflake bubble, or said something that you were wholly unused to; or, you may be here because of the many tumblrs about me, started by dim-witted, disgusting, and disrespectful fangirls whose tongues waggle more ways than a biker can travel through Thailand's highways.
A following paragraph reinforces the concept that she considers her work to be a serious undertaking.
I have reviewed people aging from 6-years-old to 60, from med students who do not and will not take their craft seriously and will make revealing mistakes in their work (not to mention full on med students have very little time for writing, as there are lives to save) and to women with children or who have worked with children. Regardless of age, I have flamed and angered them all.
Here she considers herself as skilled and valuable as med students. She thinks of herself as educated. Her tone is more calm and mature. Notice she still wants people to stay in their “discipline” and out of potentially hers.
Then the numbered bullets also stood out:
1) A cliched story. Self-explanatory, can be anything including bad romance, repeated plot lines, or just general stupidity.
3) Insert stories. I.E. Fangirl gets warped into her fandom story. Admittedly I like these stories if they are done well, because we all love the butterfly effect and chaos theory. Rarely done right, though.
4) Porn. It has been around since forever, and has no connection with erotica. I, like many adults, will not scream when seeing a woman's breasts or a man's penis in a painting. The purpose is whether it is done tastefully or done for stimulation purposes. Pornography is a vast, big enterprise, and there is a flavour for everyone, everywhere. It is a tool that serves to get someone off; it is not love nor is it good writing. You will not, nor ever will be, a talented author or person if all you write is porn. It serves as a scapegoat for those who desperately need cock in their lives. I catch you writing porn, you'll be flamed and reported.
5) Horrible and talentless "authors" and their little cretins. Basically a bad author thinks she's the best thing since Moses and her followers will suck her e-penis dry. Usually gives the best results when flamed.
She likely despises "subpar" authors that have fans. They are competition to her. When they have fans, she does not. Notice her tone regresses and her mask of maturity does as well.
Here in point 9 her tone regresses again when talking about cannon:
9) Canon is bastardized. See above. You see, I love these little things called facts, and when you violate canon, you are essentially twisting and destroying facts. I will gladly throw them at you if you violate canon, and screaming 'I'LL WRITE WHAT I F.UCKING WANT, YOU BITCH!' will just make me snicker and flame you some more.
12) If I catch you plagiarizing, either from another user or from a published work, or catch hints of it with no reference points, you will be flamed without reproach. I have zero respect for thieves and will hang you out to dry if I catch you. Congratulations on being an unoriginal shit that can't even try and who has nothing better than to steal from others.
Here she regresses into rage. It is as if again she feels that something was taken from her rather than someone else.
14) I am an absolute scrooge when it comes to facts and accurate representation. I love good characters, compelling villains, relatable heroes, good plots, and a tale that can sweep me off of my feet. If there is one thing I despise more than anything else, it's hypocrites and their attempt to right the wrongs they call out and their habit of being the enemy they hope to find.
