Also it is very clear in the ruling that T-suppression is completely voluntary; men like Semenya can continue to compete without T-suppression -- they just can't compete in the women class in International events (Section 301 of the ruling).

I guess the US prescription climate is very different to elsewhere. You cannot find a primary care doctor who will prescribe Ambien in most parts of the world, and if Rhys was still in Canada, I would suspect he would not be given access to Ambien.

Ambien in medspeak is classed as a "hypnotic" meaning it will produce a sedative stupor on most people. It is considered to be funtionally similar to benzos.

However, if someone is woken up while still under the effects of Ambien, they enter a semi lucid state during which period they are unable to create memories. For this reason, Ambien is recommended against those who are on a sleep schedule of less than 8 hours.

What Rhys is claiming he is doing (intervals of a few hrs of training, then a few hrs of Ambien assisted sleep) is downright dangerous.

Most professional athletes forced to suffer through jetlag or other drastic sleep schedule changes are prescribed surprisingly mundane stuff: melatonin washed down with chamomile tea. Most do not have a doctor or pharmacist who can vet the extensive banned substances list, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

As a side note, this makes athletes viciously susceptible to woo and snake oil - the most visible case is the colourful plastic bandages during Rio.

Ambien can also make you very aggressive. It’s not something you should be using if you’re exerting yourself physically because it can also cause heart rhythm issues and rapid heartbeat.

I’d have put him down as a cokehead tbh, what with the grandiosity and inability to shut the fuck up. Maybe he’s doing both, for uppers and downers, or maybe he’s pushing through the drowsiness sometimes for the mild high if you don’t get sedated. Waking up on ambien is a bit like being lucid but blackout drunk - you can function but you’re uninhibited and have shit judgement. That certainly sounds like our boy.
