Most Brazilian Sepharadim are either Moroccans (mainly of Spanish origins, who fled to Morocco as a result of the expulsion from Spain) who started arriving in 1804 to northern Brazil, or more recent Moroccans and Syrians (mainly 1950 'till now), also largely of Spanish extraction but a bloodline going back to the Iberian Peninsula is not what makes one a Sepharadi. [Edit to add: for example, Jews from Catalonia - a region of Spain - were never considered Sepharadim; so there's a lot more to it]

The Spanish and Portuguese Jews you speak of, fled to what was then New Amsterdam (now NYC) centuries ago, and established a community there (see Shearith Israel). The S&P heritage of Brazilian Jewry is long, long gone.

Most Portuguese-speaking Jews are Ashkenazi, not Sepharadi. And those who were (and it's been some 600 years) from Spain and Portugal, no longer speak Portuguese - English and Dutch are the most widely spoken languages among those who come from a real (and not imaginary, as is with most people claiming S&P heritage) Portuguese Jewish background.

Yaniv is neither Ashkenazi nor Sepharadi. It's a Hebrew name. I haven't taken a look at their family tree (where is it, anyway? I'd like to see), but I'd assume the paternal family Hebraicised their surname to Yaniv upon moving to Israel, as it was very common back then, and somewhat common now.

No tree on the Yaniv side of the family, but I suspect their surname might’ve been shortened from Yanovich. Just a guess.

If Miriam actually has any sort of Brazilian ancestry, and all signs for that currently point to no, she would not say she was Portuguese. Especially since she is likely Ashkenazi—immigration from Ashkenazi communities in Europe to South America was largely due to Ashkenazi Jews seeing the writing on the wall and getting the hell out of dodge in the run up to WWII and took place well after Sephardi Jews left Spain and Portugal to escape the Inquisition and well after Brazil was independent.

Long story short, I think Miriam said she was Portuguese, not Brazilian, and that you’re right—both Miriam and Jonathan are now trying to claim some kind of Brazilian ancestry solely because their ancestors lived there briefly, possibly even long enough to get a passport (I’m not familiar with Brazilian immigration requirements), not because they’re actually Brazilian. But they can’t even get their story straight and everything they say makes it clear that even if they did have a drop of Brazilian heritage between them, it’s so insignificant to them that it may as well not exist. And it doesn’t.

I don't think elsie subbed Portuguese for Brazilian, but rather she was transcribing Miriam's hysterical broken English, which probably went something like "I am immigrant, Jessica's father was immigrant. Portuguese! I speak Portuguese!" And she likely speaks Portuguese because of her family living in Brazil or whatever.

It's still definitely an attempt to ward off the accusations of racism though, especially considering the waxer targeted in this tribunal is from Brazil.

There was a huge freakout infront of the building on, uhh I think Saturday afternoon. Two cops were getting into a bit of a yelling match with Miriam while JY watched from his balcony. When I realized it was going on I saw all her stuff dumped all over the ground.

It's hard to understand her because she doesn't speak English well but from what I could gather JY called RCMP to remove Miriam from the building. RCMP seemed kind of sick of their bullshit, but Miriam walked back accross the street after the argument with the cops and while walking away JY yelled that he needs his keys back.

Overheard the RCMP telling Miriam that JY constantly lies to her for attention and she needs to stop reacting.

I don't think this fight is a permanent state of affairs though, they'll be speaking again in a couple days if they aren't already. Way too codependent to stay away for long.

Also I love the double standards here lol. She's an immigrant herself but Canada is HER country, not the country of the brown immigrants she doesn't like. She gets to claim the whole country for white people like herself, but brown people aren't allowed to practice their own religion or have their own culture in Canada and they should leave. Wow.
