I can only imagine Luke checking the sales databases and places like Steamdb just desperately waiting for a day where maybe they magically get a negative number as people refund the game more than they purchase it that day. Of course, that'll never happen, NITW is still doing pretty well, having 97 concurrent players on Steam alone at it's peak today, which is pretty impressive for a 2-year old game that lasts like 3 or 4 hours before you can put it down and never touch it again as it's a story-based game and at best you'd play it twice before seeing basically everything worth seeing.

Luke probably sees that 97 concurrent players as 97 Trump supporters trying to learn how to shame him in real time, which is insanely funny because it's a game where 3 of the 4 main characters are lgbtq and one of the main plotlines for a pair of characters is that they want to leave town to go somewhere more accepting of gay people, but according to Luke the game hates lgbtq people because it doesn't show enough examples of characters shitting on lgbtq people and merely implies it . I still can't really wrap my head around the fact that of all games a tranny could go on a years-long vendetta against, Luke choose one of the most pro-lgbt games, beloved by the majority of that community, to rage against. The game even has a mtf tranny that is shown as respectively as anyone else and the game draws no attention to their body, but Luke is still convinced they hate trannies I guess.

It was brought up earlier in the thread, but it's because none of his solutions, surgery, will ever work. I believe he knows it on some base level. It's about addressing the problem. Once one surgery doesn't work, Luke just goes on to the next familial funded boondoggle. It's the act that is cathartic. They are a coping mechanism. He will never be happy with the outcome. Luke just tries again when he doesn't get the result he wants which is to be an anime princess who's good looks and charm would beguile Ben "Impale the Shemale" Garrison himself. He refuses to exercise any of the critical thinking skills due to fetish/autism/whatever for the introspection required to evaluate his life.

Just one more cut will make him pass and solve all his problems. Just one more pull of the slot and he'll hit the jackpot. Just one more drink before bed and he will quit in the morning. His dad will respect him. He'll be just as successful as his brother. He'll get a job and move to his metropolitan utopia. I don't know all of the details, because like I've said we were never "friends", but I was heavily active on a forum (RPG.net, for the record) that he was heavily active on during the trooning. At the time, his forum handle was Something Else.

Understand, Luke was one of these people who was chronically unhappy, and he was always looking for a new, singular thing to blame. He was unhappy because he was attending a conservative college in a conservative state, he was lonely, "everyone hated him", you name it. He would even get really bothered over really silly, trivial stuff... I don't recall the specifics of his argument, but I remember at one point he went a bit nuts sperging over his interpretation of what the Sith philosophy in Star Wars really was about, as he saw it, and suddenly it seemed to deeply bother him that basically the entire rest of the world was wrong. I mean, you can see some of this personality right now in his Evangelion obsession, his obsession with time traveling mecha, etc - he gets obsessed with whatever new hotness he's found, even if he's the last one to the party - Star Wars, Evangelion, whatever.

Timeline wise, this was while Luke was working on his phD, but some time before he actually had it.

But you know what? He could occasionally be a little irritating, but I liked Something Else. His personality could verge into vaguely adorkable, and I always thought he was kinda cute. I mean, nothing there, to be clear - I don't trawl for romance on anonymous forums to begin with, and I knew he was straight, but, hey, at the risk of power leveling a bit, just throwing my cards on the table - I was predisposed to have a favorable opinion of him until relatively recently.

Around this time, RPG.net had a number of openly trans posters - we'd had some as long as I'd been posting there, but it seemed like every month or so another poster would announce they were trans, or gender-non-binary, or what have you.

Then... My memory of the specifics is fuzzy, and I don't fancy spending time searching through the mess that is the RPG.net forums, but either he copped a moderatly long ban, or else he just quit coming around for a bit. Anyways, Something Else vanished... Then, up pops Something Ellie, and there's a round of public back-patting and "you go girl"s and him thanking some of the trans posters for helping him accept himself, or comes to term with his gender, or... I dunno, I forget his terminology, but you've all seen the same basic stuff before.

There wasn't any big saga leading up to the announcement, it was all fairly sudden - and once he decided to go that route, he went that route hard and fast, pun only mildly intended. I'll give him that, he didn't waste any time coming out to the public. And after that, all his previous SJW tendencies and autistic behaviors ramped up to 11. It got so bad that even RPG.net, which basically exists to create a safe space for people like him, gave him the boot because of his behavior.

RPG.net has a subforum (Tangency Open) that can't be searched by Google, the forum search tools suck, and there are almost 20 years of posts to search through, making it a nightmare to find anything on.

This was probably the thing Luke was most known for on RPG.net - he would get very strong, yet very bizarre, takes on things, often with either no first-hand experience with the subject matter, or else fairly limited, late-to-the-game perspectives.

Remember, Luke was culturally sheltered growing up, and I'm being polite in that phrase. He basically entered adulthood and went off into the world without a majority of formative cultural experience that his peers had.

You ever watch an episode of Star Trek or some other sci-fi show where the alien of the week tries to interact with humanity, but doesn't understand anything in context, and does Zany Stuff(TM), like assuming dogs are a higher form of life than us because we seem to worship them, or doing some radically inappropriate Sexy Thing(TM) that they saw someone doing with a loved one, but not understanding the context behind it? That was what talking with Luke was like whenever culture in general, pop or otherwise, came up. He just didn't understand most of it.
