Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

What made Star Trek 09 impressive was simply novelty, it was the first of these big, splashy Hollywood adaptations of ultra nerdy non-comic book franchises.

I was basically the target audience, someone who knew Star Trek from cultural osmosis but hadn't really experienced it firsthand, it was exciting to see those characters and that world portrayed in a way that felt very modern, hip and fresh.

I remember while watching the movie stopping and thinking to myself just how cool it was to see Leonard Nimoy portraying Spock again, that they found a way for him to be a part of it and it was a respectful tribute to him.

Sure the simple "bad guy wants to take over the universe" plot was just that, simplistic, but fine to just get things off the ground, the real story was simply how the crew first met and assembled.

When the movie ended with the Enterprise flying off into space I genuinely believed it would lead to a bold, cerebral story next time, since one of the cultural osmosis things I knew about Star Trek as a franchise was it was supposed to be smart... right?

You also have to keep the movie in context of the vibe of what things were like a decade ago, it was the first year of Barack Obama, it felt like we were finally entering the "post-post 9/11" era, the Iraq war was winding down and suddenly geek culture was fast becoming "cool", while sure everyone was worried about the recession, you had reason to be hopeful things would work out ok, it was overall an exciting time and Star Trek 09 was very much the movie of the moment, I remember seeing a photo that someone made of Obama photoshopped to look like Spock, which really summed it all up.

So in other words, it wasn't that great of a movie on it's own but it had potential to lead to great things, just like 2009 wasn't that great of a year on it's own, but there was potential for great things in the future, which is more than what we can say for now, ten years later.
What’s the irony of this is like Avatar, this movie has had no cultural impact as well except launch a bunch of shitty, edgy reboots of franchises and rely on the lazy 3D gimmick. Also, 2009 was also the year when the Oscars expanded the Best Picture field by including shitty films that don’t deserve that nomination.

IIRC, expanding the Best Picture category was a response to the backlash they got for nomming The Dark Knight for Best Catering or some other throwaway award while the usual oscar bait got the important nominations. Expanding the category didn't help, since the Oscar voters are still parochial as fuck; the thing about black trans AIDS patients in the Holocaust is going to win, period-paragraph.

The Oscars became bigger fools than before by getting shit like TFA and TLJ nominated for Best Picture because “muh inclusion.”

Regarding Star Trek 09, maybe it actually inspire Disney to cash in on it by buying Marvel and Lucasfilm and Fox.

I disagree; when the winners for Best Picture are consistently masturbatory self-congratulation of some form or other, whether you pick the movie about gay black drug dealers in love from a slate of 5 or 10 makes no difference in the grand scheme of things. (It does highlight the folly, though, by placing oscar bait next to a few things that are actually both good and popular.

I was talking with some friends last night and we were discussing things Disney could have done with the ST.

We got around to Zonama Sekot being worked into the films. FYI, ZS is basically the Jedi equivalent of what Mogo is the Green Lanterns.

Somehow, a sentient Jedi planet seems a lot less silly when you consider Time Travel is all but confirmed to be making it into IX, lol.
The NJO anthology is my favourite piece of the Legends Expanded Universe. It is so much better than that retarded piece of SJW crap that the ST is.

Slightly off topic, but do you guys think the MCU might replace SW as the franchise that got fucked over by identity politics and a lack of creativity in the future?
Almost assuredly given enough time. The Valkyrie director for example is going right to this right before production, so expect deep hurting.

Can't believe they replaced this show with the the travesty that is rebels, that it has a lot of the same heads behind it as the clone wars gives it no right to be as bad as it was
I agree. I hate that Disney cancelled the last season by pure arrogance and backed down years later. That's why I'm not really interested in this "final season" of TCW currently in production because I know that they're going to fuck it up. SW under Disney means the good guys always win and never suffer, the bad guys always get ridiculed and lose. There's no actual character developpment or emotional moment like what I posted in the spoiler.
I still can't believe they brought Thrawn into that shit show that was SW Rebels.

According to the Oscars, Dances with Wolves is better then Goodfellas, and Forrest Gump is better than Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, and Shawshank Redemption.

I don't take the Oscars seriously.
The Oscars been losing creditability with the ticket buying public since at least when SW:ANH lost the best picture nomination. 80ies to late 90ies just been a continuous down hill slide made worse with viable at the time alternatives like the MTV and People's Choice Movie Awards.

Now you know how we fans of Gennedy CW felt when Feloni CW showed up. ;)

Anyway, here's some therapy.

I think the Geek community still has a burning hatred for Woody Allen as well since Annie Hall won over A New Hope.

Rewatching that video...

I thought you guys were just making meme jokes about Feloni having a wolf fetish. Then I noticed the border of one of the time portals space!Aladdin falls through.

I stand corrected. We have clearly not been mocking him enough.

Only thing that bothers me more than the flaws of Rebels is that absolutely ridiculous final shot of the characters in stained-glass looking cartoonish but surrounded by photo-realistically traced wolves with scales. Its the kind of shit I would expect to see on some wolfaboo's Deviantart gallery.

I get it Filoni... You like wolves... But that's nothing. I've gone into more details on this and even the constellations within the heart of the universe has wolves, and when jedis who aren't trained for ghosthood die, they become wolves on Lothal... The giant wolves are reincarnated Jedi... And Filoni made Ahsoka's horns pointier to give her a "wolf-ish" look, and he even made some weird concept art of his own Wolf Troopers saluting Mowgli...

In other news, any of you remember that cancelled "Bantha" ride from Galaxy's Edge I talked about many pages back? Well it turns the Imagineers didn't completely abandon it and were apparently reworking it into a Dewback (the lizard mounts from Tatooine), but that's been cancelled now too supposedly due to GE under-performing, so expect no interesting rides in the future of GE.

Also here is a picture from inside the Resistance area from the still closed Kylo Ren ride at GE.

BB-8 will be making his only appearance in the park around this area.

On a different note, here are more potential spoilers for IX:

Wedge is rumored to be in the film but he's no longer a pilot, instead he's a tutor who will only serve as a cameo.

Lando's role in the movie is actually very minor and he's only there to reclaim the Falcon and help Rey for a bit.

The reshoots for the "jungle planet" have supposedly finished according to the Bespin Bulletin.

And this... is Starhawk...
1564887272326.png

Which is a New Republic flagship which will serve as the flagship for the Resistance in IX. Flagships like this have appeared in Disney EU shit before but this will be its first appearance in the films. This ship's sole purpose is to serve as another memberberry for a recreation of the space battle of Endor and its supposedly piloted by a Mon Calamari crew much like in ROTJ for max memberberry effect. What makes things worse is that this ship in particular was conceived by none other than... Chuck Wendig... So not only is Chuck's self-insert in the movie, but even his flagship is in it... Why does this fucker keep getting validated despite being fired? And why must they keep referencing his awful books?
1564887489842.png

Just let this hack be forgotten already and quit giving him reasons to gloat on Twitter.

Anyway, as for more details on this Starhawk ship, according to Wendig's book and nu-Battlefront II, a Starhawk fleet was used to win the Battle of Jakku, and the ships were also mentioned in the TLJ novelization where Leia became delusional and started having day dreams of the shitty squad from BFII showing up with Starhawks to save her from the FO.

Finally, in relation to the comic about Holdo I posted before, she's no better than the FO and might in fact be worse since the entire moral of her story is to never question authority, trust them implicitly, especially if they're female, and you can become a great leader by doing nothing other than bitching and telling people to do the obvious.

The picture on the left is some First Order commander who buys concoctions made from defenseless animals and plants to improve her physical fortitude while also discovering the secrets to long life in humans. The picture on the right is Holdo killing small defenseless creatures with her bare hands to soak her hair in their blood to make herself feel pretty and special while doing nothing for her subordinates.
