Star Wars Expanded Universe Fans/Cultists - I HOPE YOU LIKE STAR WARS AUTISM

At one point, about two hard drives ago, I had a single panel from some comic. A nerdy looking guy is sucking a soda and talking to someone offscreen, saying "Look man, if you're gonna reference the 'Extended Universe' of anything you may as well reference a dream you had because nobody knows what you're talking about."

I feel this sums up my opinion on most of the EU and its fans. A thousand Wookie Cookies to anyone who knows the pic I'm talking about and brings it to me.

Overall, I don't really like the EU. A lot of it is hack writers misunderstanding key themes from the movies and then decades of other hacks building on it. It's resulted in some seriously mutated perceptions on what we see in the movies, which makes it basically impossible for an OT purist like myself to actually enjoy talking about Star Wars online. Plus most of it just terrible anyways, like the Vong or Luke falling to the dark side for stupid reasons.

It's also spawned some weird subcultures in the fandom. The worst is probably the Empire Apologists, who insist the Imps are the true good guys despite the fact they're a terrorist police state. Then there are other groups like the Mandalorian fangirls, who I don't really get because what they like is so far removed from what you actually see in the movies it might as well come from a different franchise.

There was so much deadweight and cringey stuff that the old EU had built up.

Case in point being that the Empire was apparently sexist against women and violently xenophobic because we don't see any female or alien Imperials in the OT and parallels between the Empire and Nazi Germany wehraboo fanboyisim.

Thankfully with the nEU the first has now been completely abandoned, with plenty of female Imps, and a logical explanation given for the lack of aliens in imperial ranks.

Disney wants to make money and sell the crack cocaine that is Star Wars, so of course elements that focus groups told them made 'minorituhs' feel excluded had to be jettisoned.

EU/nEU, in the end it's all autism.

Garauntee it won't be the autism spectacle that was the Vong.

I'm almost certain it's Snoke, or rather whatever form Snoke is in at that time. Thrawn speaks of 'true evil' out there that the galaxy has never seen.

I think LFL are setting up something with an Imperial research facility for some sort of artefact/facility on Jakku and Palps looking for the 'source of the dark side' located just outside/inside the galaxy.

Also no one should give a shit about EU novels. They all suck anyways, even the good ones.

And then...suddenly just as I Kylo kissed me passionately. Kylo climbed on top of me and we started to make out keenly against a tree. He took of my top and I took of his clothes. I even took of my bra. Then he put his thingie into my you-know-what and we did it for the first time.

Just finished Alphabet Squadron.

Verdict?

I highly recommend it. It's been done with care and respect and is a quite an exciting ride. If you're a fan of the old school STACKPOLE X-WING series, you'll like this. The authors have done well to include the barest lip service to modern gender/faggot politics, and the Empire is treated quite sympathetically. You get a lot of well done perspectives without lecturing about which side is right. This is Star Wars done properly.

It's a well crafted retort to Winbag's vomit.

I have readen dozens or hundreds of novels and comicbooks from the Expanded Universe. My favourite books are the New Jedi Order and X-Wing anthologies, as for comicbooks I say Dark Empire, Tales of the Jedi, Clone Wars and Knights of the Old Republic. My favourite character is Jaina Solo, I used to have a huge crush on her...

I’m currently going through the entire legends eu in chronological order (I’m using the timeline on starwarstimeline as my primary reference) and am midway through my umpteenth readthrough of the KOTOR prequel comics (probably one of my favorite Star Wars comic series. It’s a bit jarring since I’m constantly switching between the comic issues and The Secret journal of Dr Demagol. Anyways here are my thoughts on what I’ve read so far

Dawn of the Jedi: the book was decent but nothing to write home about. Same with the comics though they were a bit better. I really appreciated the glimpses into the ancient Jedi and infinite empire though.

Tales of the Jedi: A really underrated series that is home to some of the most important events in legends. Also has a really good audio drama adaptation

Kotor (comic series): like I said one of my comic series

Knights of the old republic 1 is coming up soon and I’m a bit excited and nervous given how long it will probably take. Especially since I’m doing 100% (with the exception of Pazaak) pure light and pure dark playthroughs

Just wondering, has anyone read the new thrawn book that came out recently? I finished the audio version a few weeks ago and it was passable, nowhere near close to the original Thrawn Trilogy but a small improvement from the previous book

Although it was a little of a hot mess at times
First it started with Thrawn making a somewhat retarded deal with krennic concerning funds being transferred to the deathstar from the tie-defenders, which leads Thrawn to finding the Not-yuuzhan vong invading Imperial space along with a chiss warship that was tracking it, which turns to a conspiracy being uncovered where a fellow Grand Admiral is stealing supplies from the deathstar. And finally ends with a head person from the deathstar project being blackmailed to build a super weapon for the chiss or something
There where some good parts in the book, Thrawn outwitting a fellow grand admiral was entertaining and the parts aboard the Chiss warship was interesting (although I haven't really gone through any of the legends books about the chis so cant tell if they butchered them or not). Though there where a few plot lines that where destined to go nowhere, namely the one that implied Thrawn was purposely holding some of his officers back to groom them for better positions in the fleet, whic would of been interesting latter down the timeline if not for it being kinda pointless the way that Rebels ended. Also Pellaeon gets kinda shafted for the second time with only about 2-3 lines in the entire book.

I mainly bring this up now instead of earlier because I heard a rumor going around that the author, Timothy Zahn was interested in doing a Talon Karrde series for the new cannon. I'm pretty sure the rumors were a load of shit but if it turns out to be true, I honestly am not sure how to feel about it.

Edit: I just realized I posted this in the wrong star wars thread, but I did get somewhat of a reaction from a die hard legends fan I know IRL to make it somewhat related. Wasn't much but when I told him this afternoon, he just blankly stared at me for a few seconds, stared off into space, and then mumbled something about "wouldn't be the same" and pointless without a few key characters" (I'm assuming he was reffing to Mara and the original cast)

There is a TON of EU material.

I was actually okay with Disney not counting the EU towards their own canon because holy shit! How can any director keep continuity with all of that?

Because the EU is so large, it's quality goes all over the place. Some of it is awesome (Thrawn Trilogy), some of it very good (Most Old Republic material), some of it solid (Han Solo Trilogy), some of it only average (some of the movie novelizations), some of it TERRIBLE (The Crystal Star), and some of it so bad it's hilarious (The Jedi Prince Series). And some of it was so messy, it felt like some kind of insanity test (Jedi Academy Trilogy).

Overall, I have more fond memories of the EU than I do most of the movies post ROTJ. Good or bad, they gave me more Star Wars and in creative, experimental, and some times epic ways.

It was good, but parts of it really felt like It hadn’t been edited properly, the perennial use of “yes, sir” as a response was grating after 10 pages.

It also felt like every single action in various battles was described in minute detail, none of which was interesting, just hard to follow.

Positives - return of Paelleon and setting up the Grysk to be threat.

Savit as a nuZaarin was interesting, but he never really did anything.
