I think Trump got close to him as business partners/friends, got suspicious, possibly confirmed them with that weird model thing that gets brought up and decided to get away from him/try to do something about it shortly there after.

I wouldn't be super surprised if I'm wrong on that either but the sequence of events makes me think there was a good chance it played out something like that.
