The lesbian became distressed, not because her partners new gender identity but because she couldn’t anymore casually make herself look queer by saying “my girlfriend” at work. Being a lesbian and a LGBT activist had become such a huge part of her identity that when she couldn’t bring it up easily it was genuinely very upsetting.

Yeah the manly advice in situation like that would somewhere ‘suck it up’ or ‘get drunk next time’ territory.
