I’m seeing so many people wanting to go back to a simpler time. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if “massive” fansub groups are making a comeback. It’s times like these that make you miss the WTFery of DiC and 4Kids.

It's the same thing as the recording studio thing I mentioned the other day. RIGHT NOW they are the only consistent dubbers in town, but why is that? Inertia. Until now, there was no real need for competition since whats out there covered the needs of the US industry. Everything was going along sufficiently with no real reason for a change in the chain.

But now there's a problem. And the reality is that it wouldn't take much for a Funi replacement. Studio issues are fixable in days and a few phone calls. But since this isn't a Manhattan Project scenario, lets call it a year of time, New facility, fully staffed and ready to rockwith no prior 'talent' polluting the water. Streaming services abound to provide that end, current contracts expire and have clauses.

TLDR - Funi does not NEED to exist. Profit is there for the taking. All thats lacking TO DATE is the impetus for making that change. Funi and their band of high schoolers have provided that for the Japanese companies ...IF... The current existing houses can't expand to take the load.

I’m not going ask what the hell a dubbie is.
But I will make the observation that Funimation is basically a small fish in a tiny pond. After ADV died, Funimation was able to rise through the ranks with licenses and dubs of shows Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho.
They’re completely outclassed in terms of consistent dubbing by Californian studios.

But I will make the observation that Funimation is basically a small fish in a tiny pond. After ADV died, Funimation was able to rise through the ranks with licenses and dubs of shows Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho.
They’re completely outclassed in terms of consistent dubbing by Californian studios.

California dubs these days are in video games (which have actual competent ADR teams for the most part) or the rare Aniplex/Viz dub.

So you mean that this whole thing started because Funimation was seen as a savior because they were deemed as a savior just because they bothered to offer anime uncut, uncensored, AND in English and they let that admiration get to their heads? That’s pretty sad.

I'm guessing this based on how Viz and Aniplex barely do anything dub-wise. It's mostly me talking out my ass, but I can see FUNi being the avatar of madness because of them being the only constant dubber in town.

One thing Funimation does corner the market on is their simuldubs, with English releases being only two weeks or so after the Japanese release, and some (like Fire Force and The Ones Within this season) having same-day releases.

I think you're pretty much spot on. Sentai can take between never and forever to dub most things, and the dubs usually are pretty bad. Viz and Aniplex don't dub everything, and usually don't dub them for months or years after release; their dubs are usually pretty good though. Funi dubs most everything, and usually on a pretty reliable timeline. If you're a dub-only watcher, odds are good most of the content you get will be Funi.

The way I remember it (short version) is that when ADV went tits up, they were simply 'there' with enough money (and former ADV staff) to simply take over where ADV, the giant of the era, left off.

Anime had crashed Comics market circa 95 style, when ADV went from importing and dubbing good shit to dubbing ALL shit they could license EDIT and oversaturating the fuck out of a tapped market. Funi just did the scenario I mentioned earlier/upthread, except they retained staff.

The only IPs Aniplex dubs are the only ones that are the talk of the town among fans. Kimetsu no Yaiba aka Demon Slayer, The Fate series, SAO, The promised neverland are some of the most recent ones they have done. Hell, I'm more surprised Demon slayer is getting a dub this year. So part of me suspects they are starting to see the market in dubbing.

Honestly, I'll take your word for it since if I'm watching a dub, or any anime really, it's well after the fact and after the hype train left the station and moved on. The only Sentai dub I can think of is K-ON!, though I think they do most of the KyoAni stuff. As for VIz and Aniplex, again, well after the fact like Madoka Magica, SAO, and Gurren Lagann. For Viz, the only dub I'm aware of is Sailor Moon, and that was only because of the 20th anniversary when they also announced Sailor Moon Crystal. And I can honestly say that Viz probably got the savior treatment from Sailor Moon fans because cousins and Stars.
