I'll agree 4kids did a lotta bad things, but children's card games to the death is snark bait incarnate regardless of guns being made invisible. Doesn't help the anime even without 4kids is heavily neutered/has some dumb anime original ideals that don't work, like the anime adaptation of its final arc or back in Battle City, Viser Des/Byser Shock being censored to whatever insane whim the the Japanese censors placed on it/the sand in Mai's Penalty Game being poisonous bugs in mangaland.
I mean, but it's a given that anime adaptions are usually sub par in comparison to the original manga. The usual explanation is that not all the manga's content could fit in a 24 minute episode or that it's harder to adapt certain situations in the animated medium because books/manga aren't bogged down by any kind of censorship law that I'm aware of. Books/manga are given free reign to push the envelope as far as they can. I'll use Berserk as an example. In the 2018 anime (the one with the shit CG), they cut away an entire arc that was in the manga, which was the arc about the child apostle. They had cause to, seeing as how the arc itself contained really disturbing imagery including child death to just name one of the lesser ones and since the anime would probably be consumed more commonly than the manga since the manga is over 20 years old, they worried that exposing the general or casual anime fan to something so horrific right off the bat may turn some people off from the show, despite the majority of the viewers being fans of Berserk or readers of the original manga.
It was kind of an extreme example to make, but you see my point in that anime adaptions tend to be dumbed down much more in comparison to their manga counterparts. Regardless if they are considered a "kids" show or not.

I'm wondering why it took this long for people to realize that the story that was linked by HanLeia was talking about an actual pedo and not Vic. Did no one bother to read the story until just a day or two ago? Or did everyone just assume that she was implying that Vic married a 16 year old?
Someone enlighten me, please.

I think for a lot of people, the story wasn't on their radar until after the ANN article came out, or after RT dropped him. Because of that, maybe they just didn't look back at the rest of her thread? I'll be honest, I didn't.

Part of it might also be that she wasn't sued, so a huge chunk of the work on the farms became dedicated to reporting on Ronica, Jamie, and the various hangers-on talking about them.

Either way, in retrospect it is pretty odd.

I've said this before, but worth repeating. By this point they, the defendants, have crossed the threshold of no return and put on the line everything from their careers to their reputation on being right. If they were to apologize, they'd lose everything. Arguably they probably would lose more from an apology then they would losing the lawsuit outright since they could save face with some of their dumber fans by blaming the judge or the "system." So a settlement isnt likely to happen with anyone besides funimation. And funimation would only settle if their corporate overlord Sony decided that settling was much cheaper.

I'm guessing Funimation is the lynch pin that the defendants rely on. If Funimations defense collapses then so does everyone else.

It was on PULL. We dismissed it as hearsay because PULL calls itself a "gossip" site. And every day was more and more exceptional shit so no one thought to check the sources. It was the wait for TCPA motion that allowed things to calm down.

It got swept up in the undertow of exceptionalism.

Rial took center stage and with her and Soye's frequency of reacting, mixed in with Renfamous and company, it was a detail they likely wanted to stay hidden.

Remember it was Funimation that set off the inquiry into that tweet, not the clown crew

Thats really the key point in all of this. And in a way I think thats why BHBH stayed silent about it. It's ultimately, the ace in the hole. All the side spergery by the snowflakes and SJWs did nothing but allow the defendants like Moronica to be led down the primrose path by their fellow spergs and LOLtwitter, and spew evermore actionable info.

Because at the end of the day, Funi is on record as having negligently launched the whole thing based on demonstratably false info and a jury won't be hard to convince that a witch hunt occured because of it.

So Funimation finally updated their One Piece dub (well the East Blue episode and not DUBBING PUNK HAZARD OR DRESSROSA)

In the video they're using Vic's version of We Are. Don't know why after what they and their scumbag VA's have done to him

I'm pretty sure that Vic was the only one among them that a) was willing to sing, and b) could sing worth a damn.

EDIT: oops I quoted from another thread

Here's my :optimistic: take.

Funimation is now realizing how incredibly unfounded and stupid their actions were and are now trying to save face with Vic and his supporters by using a song sung by Vic and hoping that we forget that they conveniently broke their unsubscribe button or that they offered really poor quality DVD box sets or that their unsubscribe button conveniently broke again or that they removed Vic's name from the credits of a certain hugely successful DBZ movie twice and tried to cover it up as a mistake made by another company.
Oops.

This is overly optimistic, but I wish there was a competent KickVic member on these threads,
Who could eloquently give arguments about why Vic may have done it, and cite evidence.
I know this is unrealistic, as the average responses from them are, "k Lol vic stans, go watch the blackface Screech."

There's no evidence or arguments from there, its all just belief and screaming... which is ironic given how much many of them hate religion.

I just wish we had a devils advocate.

They could have William Shakespear himself and it wouldn't change the facts in evidence. All he could do is polish the turd...but it'd still be a turd.

They're not that naïve, because that's 4-year-old-trying-to-glue-back-the-vase-they-broke-with-elmers-glue-after-scribbling-all-over-all-the-walls-and-the-ceilings-so-they-can-maybe-have-cookies-after-dinner-that-night naïve.

Now that you mention it, though, I'm curious about how much their bottom line suffered as this controversy's developed.

The only thing a competent dissenter could do at this point is stretch out the gaps in absolute knowledge and say "well, it's at least possible that he did it, since we don't have all the puzzle pieces".

The only competent #kickvics I've seen so far are those that are so far behind in February that their opinions wouldn't matter, anyways. After that, you're either informed or... you're #kickvic.

C'mon, did you really think they were capable of any form of higher thinking? If they were, they wouldn't be getting sued right now. If they did their jobs and followed proper protocols like an actual company and business, they wouldn't be the laughing stock that they are now.
And I hope they suffered a lot, because honestly, fuck them. I hope this lawsuit ruins them.

There's also DiC with their English adaption of Sailor Moon. The voice acting was total crap. They even made Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune into cousins instead of actual lovers - which the manga never said that they were cousins to begin with but DiC went with it anyways to make it look like they are having a incestuous relationship. Viz Media - in my honest opinion - did a better job than DiC 10 years ago.

The dub of Sailor Moon S was done by Cloverway, and once again the context was only changed due to concern about how parents and religious groups would act. You don't seem to have an issue with them not calling the main character "the Messiah", though - glad to see you only have that one particular axe to grind.

Also the voice acting was actually pretty decent once the actors got some experience, so you shut your lying mouth.

Yes I've been wondering the same thing. Very weird that it slipped thru the cracks.

And now Viz and Sailor Moon fans have that same relationship that Funimation and One Piece fans had all those years ago: the gods have answered their prayers after the years of torrents, file sharing, and fansites. And nowadays, cousins is just a way to flex for hipster points.

"iF sHe MaDe iT uP tHaTs TeRrIbLe!"

Yeah, but you didn't fact-check and you ran with it. WHERE DID I LIE? = "I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot the deputy, your honor"

Honestly, people who go "yea I called someone out, lied about what they did and ruined their life but I don't see what I did wrong" should just do the world a favor and jump off a bridge or be dragged out into the street and be shot. It's garbage like this that end up taking credibility away from actual victims.

My main problem with Cloverway was it got rid of the so bad it’s good charm DiC had. Those first two volumes truly seemed like a Saturday morning cartoon or something you’d see before you went to school. Again, “cousins” only gets brought up if you want to either beat a dead horse or wax poetic about either some dead web forum or some dude giving you some VHS tapes. It’s starting to remind me of someone I once saw on DeviantArt.

It’s basically a monkey paw’s scenario. People wanted anime to be seen as something as mainstream as American TV and movies or former nerd niches like comics, rather than just spiky haired guys screaming or tentacles raping women.
They eventually got their wish, anime and manga are slowly but surely outselling American media...but at what cost.
The cost is SJW infection. The cost is the 2017 Deathnote "adaptation". The cost is it loses what made it unique and special. The cost is Funimation using dubs to make political statements...

the cost....

is Netfux eventually getting their hands on Steins;Gate...
I would gladly help keep anime niche forever just to spare it the same WOKE death as American comics.

Probably because it was just another of several stories that all read like complete bullshit. You can go read the original story by Nyahko on PULL (archive) and some additional from the next day in two other posts on the same page. You can see just how bad it is, but let me give you a summary:
  • Vic had been talking to her and a friend online and over the phone for several months before the convention and even invited them to his room. Note, there's no indication they'd actually met before this.
  • Vic paid for their food at the convention that day and gave them free FMA merchandise and some of his CDs (with his character voices reading bible passages).
  • She has a hip deformity so took an elevator alone with Vic while her friend took the stairs. Vic molested her on the elevator ride.
  • She was 16 at the time, but didn't look like it. In fact she couldn't even ride the bus without adult supervision, even though 8 year olds normally could when going to school based on a new rule her city passed the previous year. Even now 10 years later she could still pass for a middle schooler.
  • She remembers almost nothing of the rest of the day and had locked herself in the bathroom to sleep in the tub. Her friend thought that she might have been drugged, but she doesn't believe that it would have been possible.
  • She now enjoys going to conventions that Vic attends in her area so she can play watchdog to keep him away from underage girls he wants to touch.
  • Vic wouldn't even remember her because he does this kind of thing all the time, and the fact that he would have married a 16-year old in Las Vegas in 2014 is proof.
That's just the original post and then two shorter follow up posts mind you. Even before the mention of Vic marrying a 16-year old at the end of her last post, the story is already off the fucking rails in so many different directions. But it just gets even more outlandish. Later we'll learn more true facts including the following:
  • She has had to block a lot of people on her social media because someone in her local cosplay group thinks she should be given truth serum.
  • She did in fact report this to the police at a later point in time, but there was nothing that they could do about it and they probably never even made a report since she didn't get a number from them.
  • She had a traumatic brain injury just a few months after this happened, which is why she can't quite recall exact details like what convention or city any of this happened at.
  • She can really only contact one person about this (and they weren't even there) because the rest of her friends moved overseas shortly after all of this happened and she's never been able to find any trace of them again on social media.
  • She has had to take care of herself and be an adult since 4th or 5th grade since her narcissistic and abusive mother couldn't even take care of her own self and divorced her father after blaming him for all of the abuse.
The only thing missing from any of this is the rest of the people on the bus clapping and someone giving her a one hundred dollar bill.

This story was already pure, unadulterated bullshit even before the case of mistaken identity entered the picture. It's so bad that it's not even really worth looking into further. Also, keep in mind that this story was from December so it was a little bit before everything blew up and it was part of a large thread that everyone wrote off as utter crap and nonsense from people who were complete nobodies.

Another factor was that the second half of the story and the bits about the brain damage didn't get posted until mid-to-late February. By then there were stories from people like Monica, Jamie, etc. and everyone was more concerned about going through the ANN and io9 articles to dispel the bullshit there. I also don't think anyone knew that Allison Cooke based her tweet on this one bullshit story in particular either and why should anyone think otherwise when it doesn't sound any different from the dozens of other bullshit stories that had been floating around the internet.

Oopsie! HunaLela made a big boo boo. Also, I knew there was something off about HunaLela's tweet about Vic being a pedo because she picked THE WRONG GUY! lol

Funimation is now legally fucked!

Also, them rubbing salt in the wounds by using Vic's We Are dub song is going to piss off not only hardcore Vic fans but Vic is most likely mad that they did that out of nowhere.

Whatever KickVic had proof that Vic did this and that can be thrown out the fucking window

Yes I've been wondering the same thing. Very weird that it slipped thru the cracks.

To be fair that first week was a shitstorm. I couldn't tell any of those stories apart from one another to the point where I didn't even know which ones were considered "creditable" by KickVic. I have vague memories of HanLeia's and just blowing it off as one of those REALLY exception stories.
