It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

Philippines closes part of Boracay beach for up to 72 hours after tourist allows kid to poop near shoreline

MANILA (PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A portion of Boracay's shoreline had been closed since Wednesday (Aug 14) to conduct a 48- to 72-hour clean-up after a foreign tourist supposedly let her child defecate in its waters, tourism chief Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said.
Ms Puyat confirmed that Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu instructed Boracay Inter-agency Task Force (BITF) general manager Natividad Bernardino to isolate the area for the clean-up.
"Sec Cimatu instructed GM Natividad Bernardino to isolate the area, where the incident happened with markers 100m wide on the shoreline 'No swimming, this area is under clean up' for a period of 48 to 72 hours," Ms Puyat told Inquirer.net in a text message.

A video of a foreign national supposedly letting a toddler poop near the shoreline at Boracay Station 1 recently went viral on social media. Another woman was seen in the video burying the child's soiled underwear in the sand, The Philippine Star reported.
Ms Puyat urged the public to report such incidents to the authorities should they witness them, so those responsible could face penalties for violating environmental laws.
"This was an unfortunate incident but we will not tolerate those who violate the law," Ms Puyat said.

"We encourage the public, who might witness similar incidents, to immediately report offenders to the proper authorities so that they can be promptly apprehended and fined accordingly," she added.

Boracay is under the jurisdiction of the Aklan province town of Malay, whose "Anti-Littering" ordinance prohibits defecating, urinating, spitting, vandalising and dumping trash in public places.
Ms Puyat vowed that the tourism agency would intensify its drive to inform tourists of "travel etiquette" when visiting the country.
"We will continue to coordinate with the tour operators and travel agencies in informing our tourists of the proper travel etiquette when visiting the Philippines and the corresponding fines and punishments if these are not followed," she said.
Boracay reopened in October 2018 after a six-month shut down for rehabilitation and environmental restoration.

Earlier this summer, YouTube announced its plans for a new AR feature for virtual makeup try-on that works directly in the YouTube app. Today, the first official campaign to use the “Beauty Try-On” feature has now launched, allowing viewers to try on and shop lipsticks from MAC Cosmetics from YouTube creator Roxette Arisa’s makeup tutorial video.

Makeup tutorials are hugely popular on YouTube, so an integration where you can try on the suggested looks yourself makes a ton of sense. While a lipstick try-on feature isn’t exactly groundbreaking — plenty of social media apps offer a similar filter these days — it could lead to more complex AR makeup integrations further down the road.

The new AR feature only works when you’re watching the video from a mobile device, and the YouTube app is updated to the latest version.

Then, when watching the video, you’ll see a button that says “try it on” which will launch the camera in a split-screen view. The video will continue to play as you scroll through the various lipstick shades below, applying the different colors to see which one works best. Unlike some of the filters in social apps like Instagram and Snapchat, the colors are evenly aligned with your lips and not bleeding out the edges. The result is a very natural look.

Cosmetics will work with creators through YouTube’s branded content division, Famebit. The program connects brands with YouTube influencers who then market their products as paid sponsorships.

MAC is the first partner for this AR feature, but more will likely follow.

Prior to launch, YouTube tested the AR Beauty Try-On with several beauty brands, and found that 30% of viewers chose to active the experience in the YouTube iOS.

Those who did were fairly engaged, spending more than 80 seconds trying on virtual lipstick shades.

Google is not the first company to offer virtual makeup try-on experiences. Beyond social media apps, there are also AR beauty apps like YouCam Makeup, Sephora’s Virtual Artist, Ulta’s GLAMLab and others. L’Oréal also offers Live Try-On on its website, and had partnered with Facebook last year to bring virtual makeup to the site. In addition, Target’s online Beauty Studio offers virtual makeup across a number of brands and products.

YouTube’s implementation, however, is different because it’s not just a fun consumer product — it’s an AR-powered ad campaign.

Though some may scoff at the idea of virtual makeup, this market is massive. Millions watch makeup tutorials on YouTube every day, and the site has become the dominant source for referral traffic for beauty brands. In 2018, beauty-related content generated more than 169 billion views on the video platform.

You can watch the YouTube video here, or engage with the AR feature from the mobile YouTube app.

If you don’t see your face immediately after pressing the “try on” button, you probably need to update the YouTube app.

Everything is Gamergate
How an Online Mob Created a Playbook for a Culture War

By CHARLIE WARZELAUG. 15, 2019

On August 15, 2014, an angry 20-something ex-boyfriend published a 9,425-word screed and set in motion a series of vile events that changed the way we fight online. The post, which exhaustively documented the last weeks of his breakup with the video game designer Zoë Quinn, was annotated and punctuated with screenshots of their private digital correspondence — emails, Facebook messages and texts detailing fights and rehashing sexual histories. It was a manic, all-caps rant made to go viral.
And it did. The ex-boyfriend’s claims were picked up by users on Reddit and 4chan and the abuse began. Ms. Quinn and her immediate family members were threatened. Her private information was exposed, including old nude photos from a past relationship. Chat rooms popped up to discuss the best ways to “ruin her life” and fantasize about elaborate ways of killing her.

When Gamergate began, I was the head of
development for my game studio, Giant Spacekat. I watched for months as a mob of trolls harassed women in game development with death threats and rape threats, and violated their privacy until they quit or gave up their careers.
What follows are a selection of quotes detailingthreats and harassment claims from the FBI Gamergate report (2017).
The men in our field were oblivious,
saying it was “not an industry issue.” People in power did nothing.
Since industry leaders would not, I knew I had to act.

First They Came for the Black Feminists
By JOAN DONOVANAUG. 15, 2019

In 2013, a series of disinformation campaigns were spread on Twitter, primarily targeting black women. The manipulation tactics developed during these campaigns served as a blueprint for future movements like Gamergate and continue to be shared across anonymous message boards and far-right blogs, shaping the online world. If social media platforms and owners of message boards had responded differently to the 2013 campaigns, their actions could probably have prevented Gamergate and we would be living in a very different world today.
It all began with hashtags.

When the Internet Chases You From Your Home

On the night of Aug. 15, 2014, Zoë Quinn was out having a drink with some friends in San Francisco when her phone began to blow up with messages. Something was exploding on the internet — a strange, incoherent maelstrom of outrage that would take over her life. Ms. Quinn, a 27-year-old video game developer, lived in Boston and was in San Francisco only to visit, but the visit turned into exile.
“I never went home from San Francisco,” she told me.

Evo 2019 attendees may have been exposed to the measles
Most people who have had the measles vaccine shouldn’t be at risk
Getting sick after a convention is nothing new. With thousands of people wandering around the same convention center, it’s no surprise that a few bugs would be passed around. But at Evo 2019, the biggest fighting game tournament of the year, the idea of convention illness was brought to new level: measles.

Late Thursday night, the Southern Nevada Health District released a report that a visitor to the Mandalay Bay and Luxor Hotel, who was there between Aug. 1 and Aug. 6, had a case of the measles. Evo 2019 was held Aug. 2 through Aug. 4 in roughly the same places, with most of the action happening in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, while meetups and warmups were held in the Luxor Hotel.

It’s unclear if the person had the measles was an Evo attendee or competitor, or just someone who happened to be at the hotels around the same time as the tournament. The Mandalay Bay Convention Center, where most of Evo’s competitions took place, was not listed in the SNHD’s report. However, due to the highly contagious nature of the measles virus, it is possible that Evo attendees were exposed either way.

Anyone who has had the measles vaccine is very unlikely to contract any illness from contact with the virus. However, symptoms of the measles don’t start showing until around 10 to 21 days after their exposure to the virus.

The earliest signs include a high fever, a runny nose, cough, and/or red eyes. The Southern Nevada Health District recommends that if anyone who may have come into contact with the measles virus has these symptoms they should contact their local health care provider to discuss safe way to enter the health provider’s facility without spreading the virus.

Evo representatives have told Polygon they haven’t heard of any reports of attendees affected, but they are in the process of checking to confirm.

At least the ESA didn't expose anyone to disease :story:

Beto wants to make an exemption for Section 230 for any social media site that won't hire a Far Lefty Inquisitor to implement "hate speech" thoughtcrime purges.

This would obviously target Gab, but he also directly calls out 8ch as wanting to keep them offline.

(They won't ever forgive /pol for helping get Trump elected.)

The last time the issue of hate speech came up the Supreme Court unanimously rejected it as not being unprotected.

Removing § 230 protection for such a bullshit reason would be entirely to expose ISPs to completely frivolous lawsuits in violation of the First Amendment for protected speech.
