That Terry Crews one is magnificent, fuck you.

Here's a terrible controller for you guys.

This thing is such a piece of shit, the body is way too fat, the dpad is god-awful and the assymmetrical analogue stick placement makes no fucking sense at all. The buttons are too round and the battery pack always feels obtrusive.

I agree 100% on the Terry Crews controller. But this has always been a dumb complaint.
The upper position is much more comfortable so it makes perfect sense to put the heavily used left analog on it instead of the barely used dpad. Your hands don't care if it looks asymmetric.

The games I play with a controller I mainly only use the dpad on, and I have no issue with the analogue stick being lower down even when I'm playing a game that uses it a lot more, the 360 stick placement sux mad dix and the dpad is nigh-unusable.

If you want to talk about developer-sanctioned controllers, the original Xbox controller was an early internet meme when it first came out, and was nicknamed "The Duke" because of its excessive size.

The Xbox line of consoles still isn't safe from criticism today, as the "Elite" controllers they released in early 2016 were DOA most of the time.

We'll see if their new $150 dollar controllers share a similar issue.

Beyond that, there's also the failed Ouya's controllers.

Beyond that they felt jagged, cheap, and light, there was an issue with dead zones on the analogue stick. For example, this is what a normal controller's dead zone looks like.

The red spot is where the control stick will not pick up any movement. This is to prevent light drifting, since most controllers will drift slightly out of production and will get slightly worse with extended use. It also allows the player to rest their thumb on the stick without it picking up unwanted motion. Now this is the Ouya's dead zones when used on other hardware:

And the same controller on the Ouya itself, the very hardware the controller was made for:

All of those red spots are where the controller does not pick up any motion whatsoever. I have no idea why anybody thought the Ouya was a good idea, and I still cannot fathom why. The controller was just the icing on the cake, the Ouya as a whole was just a disaster.

Yeah, the 360 controller is absolute garbage for dpad-heavy games. But it was never designed for that.
It was made for Halo and Halo clones. It makes perfect sense for that.

I liked The Duke, though I only used it a few times. I think the decision to make it comically big was a sound one. Western adult males are the main consumer of video games, but controllers were still tiny like they were made for Japanese kids.

Since no one has posted it yet. Let's go fishing.

(I'm sure it was great for the games it was made for.)

This thing for never being released.

By contrast, any time I've used a modern PS-controller, they've felt too small for my hands. And I do not have big hands by any metric, except maybe compared to a particularly small woman. The dpad on the Xbox controller is fucking terrible, though. Absolute trash. Which is why I use a 3rd party that gets recognized as a normal one.

I don't have pics but my cousin has a really fucked up XBONE controller that's smashed to pieces and held together with scotchtape (imagine a broken vase put back together with tape and that's pretty much it) and the bumpers have been replaced by screws you have to push sideways for them to work. He hasn't replaced it yet because an Elite controller (lmao) is too expensive.

I can't find the name of this 3rd party controller for the SNES (I think there was a Genesis version too) that didn't have the typical clicky D-Pad. It had a smooth surface kind of like a touch screen. There was a commercial showing off how it won't hurt your thumbs. Fast forward 6 months later and I see one of these things at a clearance sale and buy it for $5. Worst $5 I ever spent. It had the absolute shittiest D-Pad I've ever fucking used in my life. Using an actual touch screen for a mobile game would have much more precise controls.
