What bothers me about Nick's family allegedly trying to bury it is that this is behavior that's remarkably common when a family has a member of it that's irretrievably fucked-up.

I know this because my extended family had a delusional sociopath in it who accomplished some irredeemably horrifying things specifically because she was the family favorite and in the eyes of my grandmother, could do no wrong. Hence no action taken when she burned down a silo on her parents' property. To say nothing of my own encounters with that nutjob.

I hope, for his sister's sake, that the kid was smart enough to go past the parents and directly to the police. Nick Bate facing justice for his crimes would be the perfect bookend to an otherwise much-improved month.

In the United States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, has put into place the Trust Fund Limited Inmate Computer System (TRULINCS) on February 19, 2009. This allows inmates access to electronic messaging through e-mails.

If he's convicted, he'll be going to a state prison most likely. I don't know enough about this saga to know what crimes he'd be facing, but physical sex crimes are going to be state law violations.

The main exception I can think of is if he were to get grabbed on the Mann Act, but I think that would require a physical crossing of state lines to engage in whatever he's accused of doing, and I'm not sure that happened here. Plus I don't think that's a likely prosecution... I'd consider it likely only if the state were to refuse to prosecute for some reason (i.e., corruption) or there were some other serious state law issue that would make prosecution impossible.

Is there any chance that he might start mass deleting his posts and tweets in an attempt to get rid of evidence?

Sorry to rain on the raped in prison parade, but child molesters are usually put in solitary confinement if they go into prison, or into a special cell block with other "high risk" inmates (such as gang drop outs). This is for their own safety. Also, I do believe he's mentally ill enough that he'd be sent to a locked down mental health facility.

Unless the hundreds of prison documentaries I've watched are lying to me.

They will make him bathe regularly though, which to him might be just as bad (or worse) than getting raped. The sick fuck would probably love getting his anoooos penetrated.

Ok I am so fucking mad at the aunt right now.

"He's never alone with her!"

Exfuckingcuse me, do you know how often that obvious denial excuse comes out? As if there is some kind of five second rule to how long a clearly mentally ill man has to be with a kid before he harms her?

If you are not in the same goddamn room as a pedophile, or hell, even if you are and you look away for too long, you are neglecting the safety of that child. I bet you anything that aunt has gone and had a shower or gone outside to hang out the washing and popped down to the shops and that 5-10 minute opening is all it takes.

"He's never alone with her!" Is not an excuse. In fact, if you don't fucking think its safe to leave him alone with her, just don't fucking have him around her at all. Period. Ever.

Can any of the e-lawyers on here tell us how possible it would be for Nick to plead insanity? He seems to be kind of an ambiguous case -- not actually delusional, but clearly separated from reality.

I honestly think the best thing would be if he goes to a mental hospital, not prison. Nick's so visibly odd that he'd probably get protective custody in prison, do his sentence, and then get out. Given that he's so unable to even approximate normal behavior, though, I imagine that if he gets committed to the psych ward he'll be there indefinitely. Nick's nowhere near smart enough to fake being cured in order to get out. Even if the idea occurred to him, he's probably literally incapable of pulling it off. Whatever keeps him away from Anna / his sister / the general public for as long as possible is the best outcome imo.

This isn't CSI Law & Order Special Rape New York Crimes. In reality it's incredibly hard to plead insanity on a crime, and there's a limited number of charges that it can even be used as a defense for. Banging children isn't one of them, even if pedophilia is (or at least was) classed as a mental illness.

Have you tried dieing in a fire? That might convince her.
