The early 2000's was after the OVA market crashed and...well, some unfortunate things involving otaku happened in Japan. What ecchi anime there was contained fairly little nudity, if any. It started to change a bit in the mid-2000's, but nowadays you get stuff like Valkyrie Drive and Shinmai Maou no Testament, where female characters being brought to orgasm can be a plot point within the show.

I mean, if you wanna compare it to the late 80's/early 90's OVA boom, when rape was just sorta something they included for the hell of it, then yeah, I suppose it's tamer.

On the other hand, the KV takes have been pretty unrelated to the actually lawsuit. Japan is interesting since where it’s at now is where America was in the 00s. The moral guardians are the PTA instead of neon haired social media users. Said guardians correlate violent crimes to consuming a certain problematic media. Gay characters are taken more seriously yet gay jokes aren’t completely frowned upon. It’s almost like going back in time.

Then buy the figurine of your favorite waifu for the equivalent of $300 US.

The best way to put it is that the markets become more segregated. The people that wanted the naughty stuff wanted naughtier stuff, so they started catering to them hard. Because of that, the stuff that was just "kinda" naughty sorta withered away.

There's still stuff that has traces of the old Godannar style of playful naughtiness, mostly light novel adaptations. They tend to be either much more sanitized than the shows from those days to appeal to a younger audience, or have a lot more gratuitous nudity to cater to those otaku whales that spend the bucks. So you either get a Konosuba or you get a High School DxD.

I think Psycho-Pass was pretty close to a modern day GITS (Gen Urobochi helps) and the Hickman run of X-Men hasn’t been garbage.
Although does anime really count as part of the SJW era? Most of them hate modern anime and prefer older, “purer” works like Sailor Moon or Utena.

Ecchi's definitely gotten more explicit these days. There's Testament and Isekai Maou where onscreen sex are actual plot points, and then those weird 'we're pretending it's not sex but it obviously is' shows like Handshakers and Freezing. There were some standout older ones that rival the current shows, but I feel like maybe the hentai industry was just bigger then? As anime has gotten more mainstream it's become more profitable to repackage hentai as 'ecchi' to reach a bigger audience, while in the past the audience wasn't much different whether it was H or not, so might as well go the full distance and charge more.

There's companies that specifically bring in foreigners and make them work in dangerous and inhumane conditions for pennies under the banner of being 'trainees', keep them locked up in buildings under strict guard and rarely (sometimes never) let them leave the building during their tenure, and then when they break their employees so badly that they can't work anymore, they eject them again and usually feed them some kind of line like 'we used a fake visa to bring you here, so now you're banned from Japan and can never come back, don't ask'. It's most common with Philippinos, but I think they'll also grab Thai or Indians desperate enough to agree.

Can confirm, this is true. They won't even let them mingle with the regular Japanese population in most cases.
