I have a cousin who is a cop. He's told me that when he arrives on a scene of DV, more often than not it's not some buff dude who can toss the woman around like a rag doll.
He says the control is psychological. To the point when even where you can see that victim's been roughed up, she'll plead with them not to arrest the guy. And when there's been an arrest, he's even seen cases where the victim turns around and assaults the officers.
And the number one question after the abuser has been taken to the car? "What do I do now?" Not as in, "what's the next step?" - as in, "Oh my God, my life is ruined, what am I going to do?"
I have literally zero training on this, but in my opinion, most of these assholes have are not world class manipulators. They just size up their victims well. They learn who can they can exploit, and simply walk away from those they can't. Sure, there are some master manipulators, but for most of them, all they have is the same sense a con man has for identifying a mark. Just one man's opinion.
