No clue. I could think the art style or the insane randomness. Then again, Beavis and Butthead was out there itself.

DBZ and Pokemon seems to be a lot of spreg's first anime and he would be around that age when DBZ was getting popular in the late 90s. That was when Saban and than Funimation did some pretty poor dubs of it.

ZOOM was a show on PBS in the 70s with a revival in the late 90s-early 2000s. It featured a cast of preteens reading poems and jokes and performing skits sent in by viewers, along with some educational segments and songs interspersed. Fun show, I remember watching the later version when I was young.
