In the sister's statement she says Alex was suffering from a personality disorder and under care of a crisis team. He likely had BPD himself, which makes all of this very unsurprising unfortunately. BPD in men isnt anywhere near as common as in women, so people don't know the signs when they see them. If he did indeed have BPD, it would explain the behaviour in Zoe's callout post and the descriptions by the NitW team (calling him a bit unstable or whatever they said in the backer update post).
There are many people out there with BPD who are abusive assholes, but there is the other side of it which causes very severe depressive episodes, usually triggered by the sufferer thinking they are being abandoned by people they care about. I don't think I need to elaborate on how that relates to this situation.
For someone who made a game called Depression Quest, Zoe really did a cracking job posting a callout on someone who likely suffered from a condition that would almost definitely be triggered by the aftermath of being #meetoo'd in today's climate. Obviously the guy wasn't a saint, but it's no surprise if he was mentally ill and volatile that getting called an abuser to the entire internet would cause this.

Except there is no solid evidence that Alec Holowka even sexually assaulted Zoe Quinn though. So unless there is solid evidence that says otherwise then I'm simply going to be inclined to believe that Zoe Quinn made this all up.
