None of these stories would work without the very specific detail of the characters being gay or some madeup identity. I know some stories depend on the gender or even race of the character for the plot, but here, there is no plot besides the characters' identities. If an honest author gets asked what's their novel about, they'd have to say "my main character is gay and xe likes to have sex". And that's it.
And I'm not even remotely surprised because 50 Shades is precisely like this. The first book at least has no plot besides the two characters having sex. A sequence of events is not a plot. This is common among fanfic'ers who can only write short scenes involving the characters having some romantic interaction and mostly talking about it because mot of the action was already written by the original author. Kinda confirms my theory that these people come from writing shitty fanfiction that became popular and that made them believe they could write.
Maybe GRRM had a point saying fanfic is shit.
