My mother similarly has been an educator for about 30 years. In 1998, a teenager at a school she taught at died from measles-- he had cancer, but some Christian Science students objected to the mandatory DIRTY, CRAPPED BRIEFS on religious grounds and killed him.

Similar thing this year: pertussis outbreak in one of her schools has another immunocompromised kid hospitalized.

I don't believe in religious right not to vaccinate, unless you're gonna home school your kid or put them in a bubble.

And gods help you if you turn on the Anti-Vaccers for such obvious reasons as the crap they preach leading to your child's death, because they will turn on you with a fury unlike anything you've seen yet.

In addition to all the other stupid bullshit, I've always been a fan of the underlying message that having your child die a horrible death from a preventable disease is preferable to having to raise a child with autism.

And by "being a fan" I mean "absolutely disgusted by".

I feel like they're the same people who would "mercy kill" their autistic children, or comment on news articles about parents who did that with sympathy.

Fuck these people.

I really need to come back to this thread when I have a good shot of the card my boyfriend found at work one evening (He works at a hotel.. one of the guests gave his pregnant coworker a pamphlet on all the reasons vaccines ((rlly? v.accines)) are bad with a list of things supposedly in them. It's hilarious).
TBC!

Personally, I don't go for the flu vaccine. I'm too lazy to do the research and I just don't think it's that important.
My friend and I were talking about this today. I guess they're starting to require teachers and people who work directly with kids to keep updated on vaccines, and she works at the zoo with kids so she thinks they might start requiring it for them soon.

But seriously, the lack of understanding correlation =/= causation! Allergies are on the "rise" because of speshul snowflake PARENTS who over-diagnose. I have a long history with this particular brand of bullshit because I was a victim of this as a kid. I was "allergic" to corn syrup (among many many other things) because I became "hyperactive" when I ate it. When in reality I was diagnosed by a quack doctor and I was "hyper" because I was EXCITED whenever I was able to eat the stuff normal kids do. The other allergies had literally no basis other than my parents hyperanalyzing anything I did and listening to scam doctors.
I went to a nutrition/dietary supplement supply convention in the fall that specifically had a panel on this phenomenon. Marketers recognize that parents over-diagnose allergies, and want to start catering to their delusions. "Allergy-free" kid's food and medicine. It's really brilliant and I would not be surprised if this became fairly common, like gluten-free. I wish I had been able to go to the panel, but sadly it conflicted with something I actually had to go to for my job.

I don't know about the cancer and autism stuff as much. A lot of things end up with a ton of diagnoses all of a sudden just because they get added to and defined a certain way in the DSM, or become fads in psychology. So they "increase" because they are easier to recognize and diagnose, or excited psychologists want to diagnose it. I'm sure there is something weird in the modern world that's causing some of these problems, but vaccines of all things? People who come up with this stuff should be jailed for life, it's one thing to say microwaves cause cancer or whatever but this is horrifying.

I teach kids how to argue. As a warmup, we read a news article together and they have to come up with arguments. I/E read an article about cell phone bans in school and have to come up with reasons on whether the ban is good or bad. Every single topic had opposing viewpoints in the classes. Last week, we did the measles outbreak in Disney Land with the question "Should vaccines be mandatory?" It was the only topic where students were unanimously on one side of the issue- they should be mandatory you fuckin spastics.

I've always seen the anti-vaxers as a strange mix of paranoia, distrust of authority and mob mentality.

After all, you have to remember this is a group of people (most of whom with no background in science or medicine whatsoever) paranoid that doctors are either willfully neglecting or outright attacking their children. Without any verified evidence, they attack doctors--who for anything else are trusted with the most important of decisions. As the movement as a whole shows, paranoid people tend to assume a mob mentality automatically too...

Oh good Lord don't get me started on these fools.
None of these people have any idea what the function of a vaccination is and what it does. Apparently they know better than people who have gone through 8 years of medical school as well!!

That's another good point--this bunch is filled with narcissists. People who know so much more than doctors who have only been dedicated to a field for years. So in addition to selfishly endangering public health for fictitious reasons, they also have the nerve to attack experienced professionals...what a fun group...

Of course, the first time these putz' children are turned away from some institution, they're being discriminated against! You know--it isn't like the family made an active decision to stray from the norm and do something abnormal and looked down upon or anything--the institution just decided to pick on them. The good-ole victim complex, mashed in with a little bit of entitlement (that they deserve to be treated like others even if they do not behave as others do).

Third post I've made to this thread in a short time, but you can really see more and more flaws in these people the deeper you consider their thoughts.

Sorry if the images are a bit small, as it turns out they're all we have since he gave the card back to the person it was originally intended for.
Anyway enjoy

]The anti-vaxxers are not limited to fringe websites, unfortunately. There are quite a few users on tumblr, of all sites, that love to talk about the evils of 'unnatural' vaccinations:

Well...it's tumblr. You're surprised that stupid people post on tumblr?

People like these and the anti-seatbelt folk (oh they fucking exist)

Anti-seatbelt folk? Can you PM me about that one or something?

Anyway, I blame retards like that stupid bitch Jenny McCarthy and that untalented sack-of-shit, Rob Schneider. The instant stupid celebrities jump on the bandwagon, stupid people start believing it.

Seatbelts will totally trap you in your car when in bursts into flames.

and yeah these are spazzes looking for something to spaz over or parents trying to blame something other than them for Jimmy's tism.
