This is what the ongoing gamergate narrative has achieved. The golden mean fallacy is in full effect. The gamergate people were telling the truth. The anti side were lying. In some people's mind, the truth is the average.
Like people said, this was an actual real life conspiracy. There's proof. Not believing in a proven conspiracy doesn't make you smarter just because some conspiracy theories are dumb.

Zoe Quinn lied and defamed an ex boyfriend after he spoke up in his blog about her shitty behavior. The gaming press closed ranks to protect themselves, and by extension, her. In the process they spread a lot more lies, and provably colluded to shape the narrative.
Then internet fighting happened, which is messy and doesn't always have good guys and bad guys so clearly delineated.

Oh shit, you've unearthed a semi-famous, actually officially diagnosed Russian schizophrenic by the name of Nikita Sadkov (a.k.a. Zolotse: "goldie"). He has consistently shat up (and continues to do so still) 2ch.hk's (Russian-speaking 4chan) /po/ (politics) board and a few minor boards for years. He is a schizo, currently evading Russian justice in Ukraine as an illegal alien.

He constantly talked (and still does) about killing Russians and Russian children in the most gruesome ways and that earned him a mandatory psych eval to determine whether he is fit to stand trial for the Russian "hate speech" Criminal Code article. He then fled Russia and applied for asylum in Ukraine. He was denied and was scheduled to be deported but escaped and is now residing as an illegal alien in Kyiv. He has an extensive online presence, where he constantly talks about his hatred of Russians (and now Ukrainians because they won't give an asylum status to a nutter) and also about his game (he's an "aspiring" game dev and actually does have some coding skills but as far as I understand, any talent that he might have is marred by his obvious mental illness). He also appears to have a sexual fetish for black men.

I hate Russians and I have my personal reasons but that guy, if he had more profile to be featured here, is a straight-up schizocow.

the only remotely true thing in accusing that guy of being a shitlord is that in Cultist Simulator, you are able to assemble a harem of women and treat them like objects; seducing them, offering them up as sacrifices, sending them out on dangerous missions and choosing whether or not to heal them afterwards. But the claims against this new guy are literally "he said something once that made me feel uncomfortable, but I won't specify what it was." I don't care what your ideology is. NO ONE deserves that. It's always the same garbage with these people. They never go to the police. They never present proof. When asked for proof, they act like they were being asked to turn lead into gold. If they do produce "proof", it's usually just a DM or Tweet that was heavily edited or had the context removed. They make vague accusations that don't specify what happened, but made lots of inferences, so they can deny it or backtrack later on. A lot of times it just a case where the accused misread the situation, but the accuser turns a clumsy grope into "he kept me prisoner and raped me 42 times a day!' Other times it's the accuser getting revenge because the accused said "no" and didn't give what the accuser wanted. Sometimes it's just some dumbass that 'felt uncomfortable" 7 years ago and is now blowing it up to a world ending crisis. They always go after people much higher on the ladder than them - it is never someone on the same level or lower. They all cry about "I have nothing to gain from lying!", as their Patreon earnings and clout skyrockets.

When Weinstein and Cosby got nailed to the wall, it was by women who gave details and specifics, not vague statements. They presented proof, not screeching about "believe all wahmen". They faced their rapist in court, and didn't hide behind anonymous Tweets and blocklists. They had nothing to gain and everything to lose because Harvey and Bill had huge amounts of money and power, and could blacklist them.

Fact is, this MeToo bullshit has, as predicted repeatedly by all lot of people, been weaponized, and the use of it by ZQ has thrown open the doors to more dumb bitches using it. There's an argument for containing further examples to the Culture War thread, but these allegations came out on the heels of ZQ's allegation (seriously, it was 2 days later), so there's also an argument that her actions spurred others to act, too.
