It continues to weird me out that how this thread is a right wing hugbox and the the_donald thread is a left wing hugbox, yet both threads seem to mostly just ignore each other. Shouldn't the threads react to each other like antimatter?

A hugbox implies that nobody is allowed to disagree, lest they be ejected. This thread has become a place where people go who aren't afraid of a fight, who have actively sought somewhere to discuss things that are forbidden in other places (a.k.a. hugboxes). Really, as much as you've participated in this thread yourself, how did you not realize that?

That being the case, most of us who linger here tend to share a specific political leaning; and that's perhaps a greater concern, that one side of the spectrum is by and large unable to speak freely elsewhere.

I wouldn't call them cancer because cancer dies with its host. They are more like termites who finished eating one house and moved to the next. They are already bringing the baggage of those places to other states, and the states being affected are rather important in the grand scheme of things.

When I see tweets like that, it is amazing to me that the left doesn't understand why people like Trump.

If you've lived your entire life under an abuser's thumb, you assume that your abuser is normal. Abusers make it clear that your only value, to them or even as a human being, is in your compliance--and so you assume that's how everyone operates. Therefore, when you see people agreeing with one another in a way that disagrees with you, you revert to your programming and interpret it as "they value each other but wouldn't value me".

What scares me is that this has become a widespread attitude. People can't function like this; people can't thrive like this; a society can't continue to stand when the political is taken personally. And it's becoming a self-enforcing cycle.

The collective deaths of the firstborn in Egypt amounted to a complete upending of their society. Birth order determined who in the family had all the power and status. There was no need for further plagues; it was too profound a blow. And the chaos afterwards was probably hell enough to try and settle.

All that above said, I wasn't going Biblical. Locusts are a perennial threat to any agriculture, and have been a burden on us since we started cultivating plants. I mean, I'm happy when anyone's first instinct is "The Bible!", but when we're so far removed from basic food production that that's the only context in which we think of locusts, we may have some lean times a-comin'.
